Copper Price Is Rebounding. Should You Invest?

A lot of money is being poured into AI data centers. However, one thing not many people know is that AI data centers also need a lot of copper.

The wires that connect these massive facilities are made from copper. Also, copper is used in a lot of other electrical components. On average, a data center can require anywhere from 5000 to 15000 tons of copper! An AI data center can easily take up to 50,000 tons of copper.

Copper Demand Remains High

That's one reason why copper prices are not at record highs. Copper prices did slide a little on fears about the profitability of AI investment. However, copper prices have rebounded again and are now rising.

The upside in copper prices started in late 2023. The catalyst was the growing demand from AI data centers. At that time, the supply was not enough to keep up with the demand. Even now, the supply is nowhere near the demand.

A quick look at the mine development shows it has also been sluggish for the last few years. In addition, the ore grades have declined.

And let's not forget that copper demand is also high in other sectors besides AI and data centers. Copper is needed for solar power, electric vehicles, and electrification. All of this has increased the demand for copper.

How To Invest In Copper

Given this positive trend in copper prices, it makes sense to invest in it. But it doesn't make sense to go out and buy some copper from the local hardware store.

A better option to invest in copper is to invest in copper mining stocks. This way, you can benefit from the rising prices of copper.

Two good stocks to capitalize on the rising copper prices are Southern Copper (SCCO) and Freeport-McMoRan (FCX). These companies have copper mines all over the world. A quick look at both shows they are already up by 35% for the year.
