Microsoft Vs. Alphabet: Which Is The Best AI Stock?

Microsoft and Alphabet are two big names when we look at the top AI hyperscalers. The thing with these firms is that each of them has taken a different approach to AI and has found success.

On the surface, both the Alphabet and Microsoft stocks look really good & they also have a solid history. But, if we really have to pick one stock between Alphabet and Microsoft, then we must dig deeper.

Microsoft

Microsoft has taken a more passive approach when it comes to AI. For starters, Microsoft doesn't have a generative AI model of its own, but the firm has made some big investments in OpenAI.

As of now, Microsoft controls 27% stake in OpenAI, which automatically makes Microsoft a key part of the AI race. This stake in OpenAI has also allowed Microsoft to use ChatGPT in its own AI products.

Also, Microsoft has introduced a lot of generative AI models to its Azure customers. This includes DeepSeek, Grok, ChatGPT, and so on. So, this also makes Microsoft a popular choice in the AI cloud computing space.

In simple words, anyone looking to train their own AI model can go to Microsoft Azure. So, that's also an avenue where Microsoft can benefit from increased AI spending.

Alphabet

Alphabet has taken a different approach from Microsoft. They have developed Gemini, a generative AI model of their own! In the start, Gemini was more of a laughingstock. But that's changed now, and this AI model is now even better than many other big names in the market.

The best part about Gemini is that Alphabet has developed it on its own. This allows Alphabet to have full control over the AI model and also allows them to tweak it in any way they want.

Also, Alphabet has a lot of information thanks to its massive user base of Google, YouTube, & other products. This makes it easy for Alphabet to further train the model or tailor it for each user.

The Winner

There's no doubt that both Alphabet and Microsoft are really good stocks. But if we look at the P/E ratio of Alphabet and Microsoft, it becomes clear that Microsoft is the cheaper stock.

So if you want AI exposure but don't want to buy an expensive stock, then go for Microsoft. But if you are okay with buying good stocks at slightly elevated price levels, then Alphabet can also be considered.
