Economic Calendar for Analysis

The economic calendar is a fundamental analysis tool used by Forex traders to position themselves to take advantage of future currency movements. The economic calendar is published daily and may be updated on a minute-by-minute basis is one of the main trading tools for Forex traders that use fundamental analysis as signals for entering and exiting trades.

Economic and political news can change the direction of a currency pair in mere seconds and fundamentals that are true in an instant of time can be rendered absolutely meaningless by fresh fundamentals a few seconds later. The economic calendar enables Forex day-traders to keep track of economic indicators and political events that may have a significant impact on currency spot-price movements.

Forex Trading Using an Economic Calendar

A lot of new traders don’t realize there’s a tool out there that gives them access to all of the economic events happening around the globe. The economics calendar is published daily and is updated through live-feeds continuously, does not analyze data and instead reports straight figures to you. This means you’re getting the same data as a big central bank, receiving the data within seconds of the time that they get it and you’re getting good, clean figures instead of some else’s potentially skewed analysis. All of the data that gets reported to such calendars is virtually the same because they all pull data feeds from government agencies or some of the big reporting agencies such as Platts and Thomson Reuters. Much of the information is programmed months in advance which gives you a leg-up on your trading competition since you can look at the calendar a week ahead of time such that you prepare and position yourself for the upcoming market events. Almost all economic calendars are identical to one another. All data is based on a 3-tier system. Top tier, or the 3rd tier is the most important data and will have an immense impact on the currency and commodities markets.

Dissecting the Economic Calendar

The first thing that you should always do when you’re using your calendar is look for filters and times. You want to make sure that the time of the calendar is set to your local time zone because you don’t ever want to miss an event if you accidentally calculated the time incorrectly. You also want to find the filter header as each economic calendar will give you specific ways with which you can sort and filter the data as there may be mass amounts of data pouring in, much of which you may have little to no use for.

For example, you may want to sort your data based on specific currency pairs that you’re trading that particular day. The main difference between most economic calendars is the GUI, or the graphical user interface that website designers create to fit the branding within which the economic calendar subsides in. Additionally you can filter your data feed by various other attributes such as country, market category, and importance (tier level).

To learn to read the calendar is quite an easy task to master. Most calendars start out in the same order; they’ll give you the of the event in your local time zone, they’ll give you the country and the currency that the event may have an effect on, as well as the rating system which often times represents the anticipated volatility impact that the currency may undergo. While the column order may differ from one economic calendar to another, make no mistake that aside from the aforementioned differences, all of the data arrives raw, unaltered and directly from the source.

Some economic calendars come with built-in charts that may forecast and speculate on the price movement of the currency if you are indeed looking for an outsiders analysis. Listed below and in no particular order is a list of economic calendars which you can use to put you in the best possible position for success as a Forex day-trader.

Reading the Economic Calendar Results

Before you can make any trading decisions, you’ll need to further understand what the trading results, or the additional columns in the economic calendar mean. In most economic calendars you will find a column labeled as “previous”. Previous is simply the data that was released the last time the report was issued. The “forecast” label is the only column where you may see some type of variation between different calendars. The reason being that because the data sources don’t provide forecast models, the different forecast agencies do, and different calendars will pull data from different forecasting agencies.

Economic Calendar Bottom Line

As a Forex day-trader, the economic calendar will act as your best friend. You may only spend one minute with the economic calendar per day, but that one minute – every day – is a critical component of your daily trading routine; that is if you decide you want to be a consistently profitable day-trader.
