Forex trading sessions can take place the whole day from Monday to Friday. Hence, many traders consider it to be a good side income aside their day job.
However, this does not mean that you should be trading whenever the Forex market is open. It is best to trade when the market is moving up and money can be made when there is a downward trend. Unfortunately, when the market is stagnant, it is virtually impossible to make money.
Forex trading sessions can be segregated into three trading periods. The peak activity periods are the New York, London and Tokyo trading sessions. These sessions can sometimes overlap, where during these overlaps, volatility can be common.
Forex guarantees liquidity and offers opportunities to trade at one's own comfortable time. However, it would be difficult to constantly monitor your position whenever the Forex market is open. This is the reason why traders need to understand market volatility and know which is the best time to observe your positions and minimize risk.
The Forex market is open 24 hours a day, but that does not mean market movements are always active and you could find it difficult to make money when the market is not moving. If the market moves either up or down you could make a profit from these movements.
In the Forex world, there are four main trading sessions to look forward to, namely the Sydney, London, Tokyo, and the New York sessions. Historically, there are three top trading sessions that have always been the focus of traders and these are known as the system of the three Forex sessions.
These three sessions are distinguished by traders with continental names or city names such as the Asian (Tokyo), European (London) and North American (New York) sessions. Of course the open position of a pair must be in accordance with the market session in order to get the right movement.
For example, if you want to make transactions with EUR/USD pairs, then the expected movement will occur in the European and US sessions, as it is at this hour that economic indicators of Europe and the United States are released.
If you open a position in the EUR/USD pair in the Asian session, the movement that occurs is only a small volume. Another example is the AUD/JPY pair, you can see high market movements in the ASIA market session because it is in these hours that the Bank of Australia and Bank of Japan operate and the AUD and JPY currencies are managed. Besides AUD and JPY, another currency that also has high volatility in the Asian session is NZD.
Before we proceed to understanding which is the best time to trade in the Forex, let us first understand the market.
There are basically four major sessions, namely the New York session, the London session, the Tokyo session and the Sydney session. Based on past decades, there are three peak trading sessions which are mostly preferred by traders.
The International Dateline is traditionally where the new calendar day starts and the closest major financial center is New Zealand. Hence, each Monday morning the market first opens in New Zealand.
In New Zealand, traders typically refer to it as the Sydney session. From Monday till Friday, the market remains open for the entire day. However, it should be noted that there is almost no activity between 19:00 and 22:00 GMT. Also, the Forex market is closed on Christmas and New Years Day.
This session is mainly dominated by American activities, which includes Mexico and Canada along with some South American countries. High volatility is expected alongside the activities in New York City.
The session starts when the Asian trading hours near the end. This time zone is has lots of activities with several European financial markets open alongside it. Even though London defines the parameters, the session is usually prolonged due to volatility during the hours. Typically the market runs from 01:00 to 16:00 hours GMT.
The Asian market is the first restore liquidity at the start of a week. It is represented by the Tokyo markets. However, activities in Russia, New Zealand, Australia and China also occurs during this session.
Before trading in the Forex, it is important to build up a strategy of whether you will work with high or low volatility time periods. Next, you should understand what the best time is for executing trades. Also, it is important to know which currency pair to trade. Based on this currency pair, you will need to decide which session to trade within. For example, the European/US session crossover is best if you trade the EUR/USD pair.
The following is a schedule of Forex trading sessions for spring/summer in the United States (March/April - October/November):
The following is the schedule of Forex trading sessions for the autumn/winter in the United States (October/November - March/April):
You need to pay attention to the Daylight Savings Time schedule, because some countries such as the United States, the United Kingdom and Australia have varied opening and closing times during October/November - March/April because they shift from/to daylight saving time (DST).
It is very important to pay attention to the changing Forex market movements as these countries switch from / to daylight saving time (DST) on different days.
You can pay attention to the schedule listed above and there are periods where there are two active market sessions at the same time, for example during the summer from 3:00pm-4:00am ET, the Tokyo session and the London session overlap, and another example during summer and winter from 8:00am-12:00pm ET, the London session and the New York sessions overlap.
During these overlapping trading session hours, almost all pairs move with high volatility.
In the Asian trading session (there is no DST change), the Tokyo financial market was the largest in the total volume of transactions, causing the Yen to be the most traded currency in the Asian market session, followed by the Australian Dollar and the New Zealand Dollar.
During the Asian session, currency pairs that will move with high volatility are USD/JPY/GBP/CHF, GBP/AUD and GBP/JPY, if traders understand the characteristics of the movements of these Forex pairs, they can reap large profits in a short time.
For the novice trader, you should implement a long-term or medium-term strategy with small lots to gain more trading experience in the pairs.
Understanding the Forex trading sessions well is important in trading currencies successfully. This is the reason although the market is segregated into four sessions, mostly three sessions are the most optimal. Generally, the global market starts from the Sydney session and ends with the New York session.
As the Forex is highly liquid and competitive, beginner traders need to know all the ups and downs of the market to minimize risk.
