As a beginner trader, you need to understand the fundamentals of Forex basics such as long and short positions in the Forex world.
To take a particular position itself depends on the strategy of each trader who appreciates the currency movement will go up or even downward and decide to take a long or short position.
It can be concluded that if you as a trader think that the currency is appreciating, then you have to go long and vice versa if you expect the currency to depreciate, then you will go short on the underlying currency.
A Forex position may be said to be the amount of currency held by a person or entity that then has an exposure to that currency's movement against other currencies. This position can be long or short with three characteristics, namely:
Strategies are very decisive in taking positions in different currency pairs. Traders who expect the currency price to appreciate will make a purchase transaction. The size of the position taken must also pay attention to the trader's account equity and their respective minimum margin limits.
Before making a transaction, it is very important for traders to choose the appropriate amount of leverage.
You may think of a long or short Forex position as betting on a currency pair whether its value goes up or down. A trader will choose to take a long position if it will have a positive investment balance in the asset in the hope that the asset will continue to appreciate.
Similarly, a trader would have a negative investment balance with a short position, hoping that the asset would continue to depreciate so that at a later date it can be bought back at a much lower price.
With the hope that a currency pair will appreciate, a trader will take a long position in Forex trading. For example, USDJPY.
If a trader places a buy order, they will be holding a long position on the base instrument they bought, in this case USDJPY. The true objective is the response of the USD against the JPY.
So if the trader buys two lots of USDJPY, it means that the underlying USDJPY direction is two lots. Of course, before placing a buy order, this trader is looking for a buy signal to enter a buy position. For a buy signal it will depend on the indicators mastered by each trader.
An example of a buy signal on the support and resistance indicators is when the USDJPY currency depreciates to a support level, for example 110,270. This movement has been supported by this level several times and this this level is considered a support level and offers traders a buy signal when the price drops to that support level and turns upwards.
If the above described a long position, then automatically the short position is the opposite of the long position. If in a long position the trader hopes that the currency underlying its value will appreciate, then in a short position the trader will expect the currency's value to depreciate or fall.
To sell this currency, it means that the trader is selling the underlying currency in the hope that the price will fall in the future, so that the trader can buy back the same currency at a later date with a much lower price position (depending on the trader's policy of taking profit). The disparity between the higher selling price and the lower purchasing price would definitely help traders who take short positions.
As an example of a long position, assume that a trader is looking for a sell signal for the USDJPY currency pair. Sell signals also depend on the strategy of each trader and what indicators they are good at. For example, they also use the Support Resistance indicator, so a sell signal will appear when the price of the USDJPY currency pair reaches the resistance level.
The resistance level is the price level at which the value of the USDJPY currency pair is having trouble breaking out and going up to the top. If the USDJPY has strengthened to 114,480 and is struggling to go up further, the price will turn down again whenever it hits 114,480, then this level is the resistance level of USDJPY. And a sell signal will appear when the USDJPY price touches this level and turns down.
Taking long and short positions is again highly dependent on the approach of each trader. Make sure you really master the indicators used and have tested them several times before deciding to use them.
