You might have heard about Forex and Forex trading and the success it has brought some people.
Forex involves the exchange of currencies. Forex traders exchange various currencies with the aim of profiting from the buying, selling and exchanging of currencies all over the world. It is also common for Forex traders to speculate on prices going both up and down on very liquid and volatilite currency markets using their knowledge and experience.
Huge sums of money are exchanged daily on world Forex markets. Of course the Forex market is not only for individual traders. As Forex is the worlds largest financial market this financial instrument consists of investors from commercial companies, investment management firms, central banks, banks, hedge funds, private investors, and of course the brokers.
With such huge amounts being exchanged by these operators, Forex is the largest financial sector and has high liquidity. Daily Forex transactions can reach up to £4 trillion, that is more than the total values of the equity and futures market combined.
Lets clarify different information about Forex markets. The Forex Market operates based on foreign exchange markets. In this market, it is impossible to dominate with a single exchange. The market gains influence from the complicated networks of brokers and computers on a global scale.
In the Forex markets, Forex brokers have a crucial role to play. They are the makers of the market itself, with their bids and requests for currency pair exchanges that make the Forex markets accessible and contribute to the millions of daily bids on the market.
There are different levels of Forex markets to participate in. You can say that there are large and small ponds for currency exchange transactions. The larger pond would be the InterBank market. This is the place where there are trades of currencies with the purpose of adjusting balance sheets and hedging. Of course, such transactions would only be possible with the request from clients.
The smaller pond would be the OTC (over the counter) market. This is the place where transactions with much smaller scales happen. It usually consists of individual trades through brokers or online platforms.
You might have heard about markets which deal with commodities, equities, and bonds. They all have different operating hours and varying closing times. Usually, you could expect them to close in the late afternoon (New York time). However, you cannot expect the same with the Forex Market.
The Forex market does not close overnight, it will operate from Monday morning Asian time to Friday Afternoon New York time. Though, there are still some exceptions, for example when market currencies are emerging.
There is one factor that dominates the market. There will always be one thing that most individuals favour over another. With currency, the most preferable is the stability of Forex markets with relatively high market cap relative to other markets. The traders favorite is still the US Dollar which dominates the market with a 85% domination of all trades.
You should also be able to guess the second domination, which is the Euro conquering 39% of overall trades. The least dominating currency is JPY (Japanese Yen) which gets 19% of overall market transactions.
The study from Greenwich Associates in 2018 shows that JPMorgan Chase & Co. as well as Citigroup holds more than 30% share of the global market. This makes them the two biggest banks in the Forex Market. The remaining places are filled with global major banks such as Deutsche Bank, UBS, and Goldman Sachs.
Back in the era of precious metals such as Gold and Silver were the main currency. Until the end of World War I. However, after the war was over, the system could not maintain its integrity and collapsed. Then came a new system that would replace the older and more unstable system.
The new system was called the Bretton Woods agreement which pioneered the establishment of three crucial global economic organizations. These organizations are the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development (IBRD), General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT) and of course the well-known International Monetary Fund (IMF). This was when the usage of gold was replaced with US Dollars which was also approved as an international currency. The dollar supplies were guaranteed by the US government with the same amount of gold reserves.
However, Bretton Woods has not been in use since 1971, when the active US president at that time, Richard Nixon suspended the convertibility of Dollars into gold. The official currencies were then allowed to choose their exchange pair and decide their value based on supply and demandon the international markets.
