Lead broker Guide

Trading lead

Lead can be identified as a heavy metal with a unique colour, bluish grey.

Lead is obtained from lead sulphide compounds taken from Galena minerals. Lead was once one of the most important non-ferrous materials, but in the early 20th century, this position was taken by other metals such as copper, zinc, nickel and aluminium.

Lead is one of the most crucial metals.

Lead Uses

Currently, lead is the most widely used material in batteries. It is an important component in making an accumulator.

In addition in the construction industry, making fuel tanks, pipelines and making ammunition, lead is used as a material.

Leads main use is for its ability to generate electrical energy from chemical reactions. Although dangerous for human health, in the medical world, lead is used as a radiology.

The history of lead as an important component in producing goods can be traced back to Egypt in ancient times. Early civilizations used metals in pottery glazes, solder components, paints etc.

They even throw away decorative objects made from lead. Later in the 15th century, lead was used as material for the cathedrals roof and stained glass windows.

Nowadays, modern mines can produce more than 4.8 million metric tons of lead per year, while recyclers produce lead around 5-6 million metric tons.

Lead Production

There are known two methods for producing lead, mining production and recycling production. These two methods individually account for about half of the total production in the world.

Mining production of lead involves extracting metals from ore found deep in underground mines.

More than 61 minerals contain lead, but only three minerals considered commercially contain quite a lot of lead, one of which is Galena. Currently the most lead production is extracted from Galena.

When this mineral is extracted, it can produce more than 95% lead. Because it only contains lead and sulphur in its purest form.

However, ore containing Galena minerals usually also has significant content from other metals such as silver and zinc. That is why lead production usually occurs as a by-product of silver or zinc mining.

Lead Refining

Ore concentrations both of lead and zinc usually occur together, and they often contain some other precious metals such as gold, silver and copper.

The first step is to isolate the lead in the sed. Then the seed is broken into the concentration particle which is bigger than before.

Then the producer grinds it with the water to make the particles much smoother. The water will then help melting the lead and the other substances mixed in the tanks in order.

When stirred in the tank, zinc and lead particles will float upwards, while the clay and other silicates sink down. Then a chemical called a depressant is added to this tank.

These chemicals cause most zinc particles to sink to the bottom and cause lead particles to float upward.

The lead ore is then extracted quickly. (In the next process, additional chemicals such as copper sulphate will help get rid of zinc ore).

After this process, the cleaned skim lead particles contain about 40 and 80% lead. The remaining concentration of this process will contain other particles such as silver, sulphur or zinc.

These particles are then heated in a smelter to be melted to remove sulphur and other impurities.

Then lead particles are mixed with other materials including limestone and sandstone. The resulting mixture is spread and heated with air until it reaches a temperature of 2,550 degrees Fahrenheit.

A brittle material called sinter will be produced from this process, which is mostly lead oxide, but also contains zinc, iron and silicon oxide.

Sulphur in concentrate burns in the form of sulphur dioxide gas. The liquid lead will later be produced from burning sinter lumps at a temperature of around 2,200 degrees Fahrenheit using a blast furnace with coke fuel.

Lead Refining

Liquid Lead Refining produces 95% pure lead bars. To be eligible for sale, the level of lead purity must be around 99 - 99.999%.

Then further refining is needed in the drain kettles to remove any residual impurities. After this final refining process, the lead is cooled and then put into blocks weighing about one ton.

Some refineries in addition to refining lead usually also produce lead alloys for certain industrial purposes. The alloy added with antimony can be stronger than pure lead, and is suitable for use in products such as pipes, cable sheaths, ammunition etc.

In secondary production, secondary lead production involves recycled goods such as batteries. Cable, pipe, sheet and other metal covers can also be recycled for lead.

Lead recycling is simpler than mining. The results of lead recycling account for half of all lead production in the world.

Even the recycling rate of lead-containing batteries reaches 99% in Europe and the United States. Smelters separate battery components such as lead, paste, plastic, and electrolytes (acids).

Before being used in new batteries, these lead particles will be processed in a high furnace and then refined.

The lead produced from this recycling process turns out to have the same quality as the lead produced from mining.

The country which currently accounts for about half of all lead production is China. As the first rank, even China produces five times more than Australia which is ranked second. While in 2020, world trade is currently in low demand for zinc and lead.

Lead Market Future Outlook

The low numbers on financial charts were clearly seen in March 2020.

This is also due to the minimized activity of the industry during the Covid-19 outbreak.

Basically industrial activities that have been massively reduced in an effort to prevent the spread of the Covid-19 virus especially in Italy (as the centre of the spread of Covid-19 in Europe) have caused market players to hold back buyers of lead.

In the United States and the UK, lead business remained tight and demand for lead and batteries was also depressed. It was quite devastated by the Covid-19 outbreak. Especially now that many automotive companies are stopping operations.
