Today, cryptocurrencies promise a revolution in finance and many other fields of life. Among them, there is one cryptocurrency that has the ability to disrupt a billion-dollar market of cross-border payment transfers-the Ripple, also known as the XRP token. If the XRP manages to gain traction, payments between banks present in different countries or even different regions can happen almost instantly.
Just imagine that you send money from country A to country B. Normally, it would take anywhere from 1 day to 7 business days. But with XRP involved, the transfer would happen instantly. That is why the XRP project is targeted towards the banks rather than the general public.
A lot of cryptocurrencies are trying to make their way into the retail market and general population. But XRP decided to take on a different path and only targeted banks and similar institutions. If we look at this strategy, it is pretty clever because the banks are already established. So, XRP is taking advantage of this fact and leveraging the bank's solid presence in order to grow.
If we compare the BTC with XRP, the only thing they have in common is that they are both cryptocurrencies. If we look at the XRP, it is centralised, while the BTC is decentralised. Another difference is that XRP is for banks while the BTC is for the general public.
One thing that XRP excels at is its low fees for the transfer between different wallets. The speed of this payment transfer is also almost instant. Together, these two features make it stand out from the competition, including BTC, which does not come with those features.
Unlike trying to do a little bit of everything, Ripple is aiming to do one thing (cross-border payments), and it seems like it is doing it right. Many banks have started using the XRP on a small scale, and if this trend continues, it will be possible that XRP could get more banks on board.
If Ripple succeeds, it will transfer the standard bank wire transfer which is currently carried out by the SWIFT protocol. But this system is flawed as it takes a lot of time (days) and carries a high fee. But if the banks replaced SWIFT with XRP, the speed of transfer would become really fast (think seconds) with minimal fees.
But it is not just banks that stand to gain from solutions such as Ripple. If you look at the various payment solutions that offer cross-border transfers, such as MoneyGram and Western Union, they could learn from the XRP too
There is one area that might be troublesome for XRP in the near future. The digital transformation of traditional fiat currencies can affect the whole ecosystem of cryptocurrencies.
Seeing the benefits of cryptocurrencies first hand, many central banks have started working on digitalising their respective currencies. If this happens and the traditional fiat currencies move to the blockchain, then there will be no need left for solutions such as XRP.
If we look at the XRP, it reached almost $2 on 13 April 2021. But it could not stay at that price tag for long due to the negative news that made the BTC and every other cryptocurrency slide down. Right now, XRP is trading about $0.59.
If XRP gains strong support around this area, then there is a good chance that Ripple can reach the $1 level once again within few weeks. The nearest resistance levels after the $1 level will be about $1.11, $1.25, $1.45, and $1.712. Finally, a strong resistance stands near the $2 level, which is the most recent high.
Digital Asset Investor, a very famous and successful investor, believes a $250 target for this cryptocurrency is possible.
There are two possibilities when it comes to XRP. Either it will reach a level of mass-scale adoption by various banks and become a standard for payment transfers or a much better alternative at cross-border payments could replace the XRP.
The possible digital versions of the Euro, USD, and other fiat currencies will leave no room for the XRP and other crypto assets.
In the past, there was no such thing as private parties making their own currencies. It is the first time that currencies are being made by third parties rather than the governments or the central banks.
So what do you think of the XRP? Is it destined to become the next thing, or will it be replaced with digital fiat currencies?
