Vietnam is an Asian country known for its energetic cities, beaches & amazing sceneries. Besides being a beautiful country, Vietnam is also known for its amazing economic development over the past 3 decades.
Vietnam, which was once a poor nation, has transformed itself into an economic giant, thanks to the reform program started in 1986. The name 'Đổi Mới' was given to the economic reform program, which was launched more than 30 years ago. Today, the country is known for its bustling cities and a fast pace economic growth.
In just 16 years (2002-2018), Vietnam managed to lift more than 45 million out of poverty. GDP per capita also increased tremendously during that period and reached above $2700 in the Year 2019. Today, only around 6% of people live in poverty, as compared to previous poverty levels of 70%.
The country's economy is completely interconnected with the global economy. With the COVID-19 pandemic dragging down the global demand, the Vietnamese economy also took a hit. The result of the pandemic was clearly seen in 2020 GDP growth, which stood at 2.9%.
Positive GDP growth of 2.9% in 2020 is not so bad if we compare it with other countries. Major economies in Europe and the USA saw a sharp decline in the GDP growth during that period. Many top countries even had sharp contractions during 2020. So Vietnam performed much better than the rest of the world.
The country managed to avoid contraction, which is a good thing. However, the pandemic had a long-standing effect on household income. Around 45% of the households saw their incomes reduced (comparing Jan 2021 with Jan 2020 income).
This year, the World Bank and others forecast growth of more than six percent for the country. World Bank, in particular, sees the country's economy grow 6.6% in 2021. The factors that will fuel this growth are increased exports, recovering domestic market, and a sharp decline in new COVID-19 cases.
The middle class may also see an increase, according to World's Bank forecast. The bank sees the middle-class population increasing to 26% in the year 2026 (around 5 years from now).
There is a couple of demographic challenge though; A rapidly aging population. And rising population with a forecast of 120 million in the year 2050. The government will need to adjust its policies to adjust for the upcoming demographic challenges in the country.
HCI which is also known as the human capital index, shows the productivity of the population. Vietnam's HCI score is around 0.69, which means its population will be around 69% productive, provided that he/she receives proper education & healthcare. Once again, this is one of the highest HCI sores in the East Asian region. In the last 10 years, the HCI score saw an increase of 0.03 (from 0.66 to 0.69).
The Healthcare system also improved along with the rising living standard. In a period of 24 years (1993-2017), a sharp decline of almost 50% was seen in the mortality rate of infants.
Average life expectancy also benefited from improved health outcomes. Today, the average life expectancy of a Vietnamese is 76 years as compared to the previous value of 70 years. Once again, the life expectancy number is the highest in the region.
UHC (health coverage index) of the country is around 73, which means that a big portion of the population is covered.
Providing access to the infrastructure is really important for sustained economic growth. If the population does not have access to electricity, clean water & education, it would mean wasted potential.
Vietnam has also leaped ahead in this department for the last 30 years. Around 99% of the total population has access to electricity. In 1993, only around 14% of people had access to electricity.
Clean water is accessible to 70% of the population (2016 data). When compared with 1993, only around 14% of Vietnamese had access to clean & healthy water. In past years, providing clean water to rural areas was a major problem. But that was solved, thanks to the Đổi Mới plan.
Looking ahead, the country would need some improvement in the physical capital investmentnt. Currently, the country is far behind the other countries of ASEAN. For sustained growth, a healthy injection of investment in the infrastructure will be required.
The country is doing really well in economic terms but at a cost. What cost, you may ask? ENVIRONMENT!
Rivers are filled with plastic and other garbage, which is adversely affecting marine life. The air quality is also not as good as it should be.
Vietnam will need good waste management to reduce the environmental impact of fast economic growth.
With a forecast of 6.6% GDP growth in 2021, Vietnam has joined the league of fastest-growing economies of the world, such as Turkey, China, and others.
