Used Margin In Zerodha Guide

Used Margin in Zerodha

Zerodha is a famous brokerage house in India that has been around for more than 10 years now. According to independent estimates and experts, Zerodha is the biggest trading platform in India, with valuations of more than $1 billion (USD). Using the Zerodha platform, Indian users can buy shares, currencies, and various other financial products.

In the Indian market, there are tons of brokers that allow users to trade various financial products. However, not all of them have the experience, expertise, and reputation to match Zerodha. That is why it is one of the biggest brokerage houses in India. This allows trading at a discounted or cheap rates.

A popular product in trading is called margin, which is another word for a loan. On the Zerodha platform, traders can use margin to open large volume trades that exceed the total deposit present in the account. How does this happen? Zerodha provides the rest of the money as a loan while the user only has to pay a fixed amount. This is the definition of margin.

In technical terms, if you subtract the total investment value from the loan amount, the margin value can be obtained as a result.

This means that if you use the Zerodha kite platform and perform a transaction using margin, you are actually getting a loan from the Zerodha broker. For example, a $100 position might require a margin of $50. In this example, $50 will be the margin and that amount will be blocked in the user's account.

So what is the benefit of margin in Zerodha kite? Well, for starters, it means that Indian traders can buy large quantities of shares and other products with limited money. As for the downsides, the user will be exposed to a higher risk since he is opening a position that is worth more than the funds present in their account. Another problem is that margin trading does not give you rights to get digital deliveries of securities in the account. That is why Zerodha margin trading can only be used for day trading.

Once the time period of the day has passed, the trade will be converted from margin trade to non-margin trade. In that scenario, the user will have to pay the full amount required to maintain the open positions.

Meaning Of Margin Used

Before we go over the term 'margin used', let us look at the meaning of few other terms.

One of the terms is 'TAV' or 'total account value'. This simply refers to the amount of money present in your account that is available and is not being used for any trades. This is just like the meaning of total balance when it comes to your bank account.

The second term is the 'margin available'. This refers to the money present in your account which can be used for margin trading. If you had $1000 available as margin, it means that $1000 can be used to open positions.

The last and most important term is the 'margin used'. This refers to the money that has been used to buy securities. The amount of margin used depends on your leverage and your position. In the case of x100 leverage with a $1000 position, the margin used would only be $10.

Cons Of Using Margin

One of the biggest reasons that traders to lose money in India, and in other countries, is buying more than what they can afford. Different brokers such as the Zerodha offer margin trading which may distract and trick the common person into thinking that they can make quick money. In reality, this can end up costing you a lot of money.

For example, a trader may buy 1000 INR worth of shares if he had 1000 INR in their account. IN case of a 10% loss, the loss would only be 100 INR. If the trader closes that particular position, he will only have incurred that loss of 100 INR and would still have 900 INR in their account.

However, things get messy in margin trading. In this scenario, a trader might open a position worth 5000 INR by using 1000 INR as the margin. In this example, a 10% loss would mean a 500 INR loss. This time, the trader's account is down by 50% since the total cash was only 1000 INR.

In both cases, the loss was only 10%, but its effect on the account's value differed greatly. In the first case, the trader loses 100 INR, and in the second case, 500 INR is lost.

Most users only look at the potential profit that can be made using margin trading. But the reality is that most traders actually lose money, a common sight in all countries.

So what is the solution? Only invest with the money you have and avoid loans. Indeed, it takes time to build your wealth slowly. It is, however, stable and, unlike margin trading, does not resemble a gamble.
