Created by Hayden Adams on 2 November 2018, Uniswap is a finance protocol and allows automated transactions between cryptocurrencies through the Ethereum blockchain. It is decentralized and known as the fourth largest crypto exchange with respect to daily trading volume, $220 million in October 2020. Andreessen Horowitz, ParaFi, Union Square Ventures LLC, Paradigm Venture Capital and a couple of more venture capital firms have invested in the project.
It uses liquidity pools instead of serving as a market maker. The liquidity providers are awarded a percentage of the fee generated for a trading pair. In this article titled Uniswap Risks, let us discuss the protocol in brief and also the risks associated with it.
Uniswap is not a regular exchange. One may not find the buy order on it. There is not even a specific listing. It is open for all. Any entity can add liquidity to it for a particular pair, but it is important to ensure the desired pair is locked or else the liquidity can be taken away quickly.
There are two domains to be explored. One is Uniswap info and the other is Uniswap exchange. The first website is for tracking the data available on the exchange like checking the volume on individual pairs, price of the token, etc. The second domain is the place where trading or swapping is implemented.
The first thing is to connect a wallet with it. A clickable button is available to do so. It is located on the right top corner. A couple of wallets to name here are Fortmatic, Portis, Coinbase Wallet, WalletConnect and MetaMask. Immediately after the connection is made, the swapping can be started.
While selecting the tokens, it can be noted that some are missing. The tokens which are missing can be added manually by using the contract's address from Etherscan.
Before executing the swap feature, it is important to take note of the slippage tolerance. If it is selected as 1 percent, one may get a number that is either higher or lower by 1 percent than what was initially displayed.
Next to understand is the transaction deadline that reveals the maximum time wished for the swap to be in a pending position. If the transaction pending period is more than what has been selected, a revert will be seen.
Apart from these two notes, it is important to consider the price impact while swapping larger amounts.
It is important to know the bad actors on it. Several scams have been noted with cryptocurrencies in past. Considering all these, below are some of the Uniswap Risks:
One of the common problems is smart contracts of fake projects and this impersonates the real ones. Moreover, the liquidity providers can pull out liquidity and this may lead to a loss for users.
Ethereum's gas fee is moving upward rapidly due to heavy network usage. The current congestion is 97 percent. This means using Uniswap is highly expensive and a single token transaction may cost even $20. Apart from these, users need to get approval for every new token need to be swapped. This too incurs a fee and it is up to $2.
There are sites that impersonate Uniswap. It is common with several cryptocurrency-related services. It is important to take note of the two domain names mentioned in the article. Everything else is not to be considered original.
Apart from these, it is important to understand that Uniswap is a convenient exchange protocol and there is either no registration process or personal information. It is intuitive and easy to use.
It is highly important to beware of the bad actors and there are thousands of fake tokens in the ecosystem that impersonate the real ones. It is suggested to double-check these from Ethereum.
It is important to understand what cryptocurrency is. It is also important to understand that cryptocurrency is highly volatile. If these two factors are considered, one may feel comfortable dealing with Uniswap even though nothing can be guaranteed in the world of digital currency.
In this article titled Uniswap Risks, we briefed about the Uniswap Protocol and what the ins and outs of it are. We also talked about the associated risks and the factors to consider to avoid getting scammed with fake tokens.
Beginners and novice traders need to take extra attention while dealing with Uniswap Protocol.
