Types of Cryptocurrency Guide

Types of Cryptocurrency

The trading of cryptocurrencies is the latest global craze in the financial markets. Although it is not real money (in a micro sense), it can act like it in a broader way. Cryptocurrencies are forms of digital money which have no central authority or government to control them. The industry operates without the involvement of middlemen, governments, or banks.

In this article, titled 'Types of Cryptocurrency', we will discuss some of the top cryptocurrencies on the market. Before this, let's take a deeper look at some of the facts.

Cryptocurrencies are secured or encrypted via a network of connected computers and specialised software code called cryptography, which is akin to a complicated puzzle and extremely hard to crack.

According to a recent study, there are currently at least 50 million blockchain wallet users and Bitcoin, the first cryptocurrency in the world, boasts more than 7 million users.

Coins vs Crypto Tokens

Tokens and encrypted coins are categorised as crypto and are listed as alternative cryptocurrency coins or tokens.

Alternative Cryptocurrency Coins or Altcoins

Bitcoin was the first and is now the most popular digital currency, and coins other than Bitcoins are known as Altcoins. They are produced by computational solutions to mathematical problems, and some altcoins worth mentioning include Litecoin, Peercoin, Namecoin, Auroracoin, and Dogecoin.

Namecoin was the first altcoin, created in 2011.

Bitcoin limits the supply of coins. Most altcoins also do the same in order to keep a check of their supply and demand, helping reinforce their value. Bitcoin has a fixed maximum volume of its supply, capped at 21 million, which is yet to be fully realised.

Most altcoins follow this same framework and some even claim to be better than Bitcoin. Having said this, there are some which follow different frameworks with their own separate systems. These include Ethereum, Omni, Ripple, Nxt, Counterparty, and Waves.

Tokens

While discussing types of cryptocurrency, let's take a look at tokens. These are not like altcoins and are instead created through Initial Coin Offering (ICO), similar to the IPO found within financial markets. These are represented as value tokens, security tokens, and utility tokens.

These are not used as money but instead to describe a certain function. This is similar to the American dollar, which lack values in itself but instead represents value.

Popular Types of Cryptocurrency

Below is a list of popular types of cryptocurrency:

Bitcoin

Bitcoin was the first and is now the most popular cryptocurrency in the world. It was created around a decade ago and currently there are at least 18.5 million units in circulation.

Bitcoin Cash

Bitcoin Cash was created in 2017 and is one of the most popular coins in the industry. Its block size is 8MB while that of Bitcoin is 1MB. This makes it faster to process.

Litecoin

Litecoin functions similar to Bitcoin and was created in 2011. A former Google employee created it with a focus to improve on the technology used by Bitcoin. It has lower fees, shorter transaction times, and a more dedicated set of miners.

Ethereum

Ethereum is like an app store, not a digital currency. No middleman controls its use and proliferation, and it is only the original creator that can make any changes to its value or use. Ether is the token used to represent it, and users and app developers utilise it as currency.

Ripple

Ripple is a cryptocurrency, but not based on blockchain. It is not for individuals to use, but instead for large corporate houses to move funds overseas. XRP is its coinage and its system allows the transferal of funds in Bitcoin, dollars, and several other forms. It is believed that the Ripple system handles 1,500 transactions per second, in contrast to Bitcoin handling just 3 to 6 transactions per second (while Ethereum handles 15).

Stellar

The stellar network is being used for money transfers in a quicker and more efficient manner across the world. Ripple co-founder, Jed McCaleb, designed it in 2014. Non-profit organisation Stellar.org operates it in order to assist developing economies that lack access to investment opportunities and traditional banks.

NEO

NEO was developed in China and its main competition is Ethereum. It was previously known as Antshares and was developed by Erik Zhang.

Cardano

Cardano assists in sending and receiving digital funds through a sustainable and balanced ecosystem.

IOTA

IOTA was created in 2016 and does not work through a blockchain. Instead, it works through smart devices, and the coin it is represented by is the Internet of Things Application (IoT0.

Types of Currency Verdict

There are several types of digital currency and some are extremely popular among investors. Bitcoin was the first such digital currency, followed by other coins such as Litecoin, Ethereum, Ripple, Stellar, and Cardano. The crypto industry is highly volatile and greatly speculative. New traders are urged to first research the industry before buying their first digital coins.
