The Polkadot blockchain is a mutli-chain crypto interchange and translation network. It is heterogeneous and the brainchild of Ethereum co-founder Gavin Wood. The chain uses Parity Technologies Substrate modular framework to enable customized side-chains and connects to public blockchains.
In this article titled Polkadot Risks, we will discuss Polkadot, its creation story and the level of risks for cryptocurrency enthusiasts.
Polkadot was co-founded by Gavin Wood, Peter Czaban and Thiel Fellow Robert Habermeier. Sharding hurdles of a blockchain was the first concept behind its creation. In about four months timeframe the team came up with a clear vision to build a heterogeneous multi-chain framework. A related white paper was released on November 14, 2016.
The technology used is said to be supporting web decentralization and the concept was in fact pioneered by Wood himself. He coined the word Web 3.0. The innovation thereafter was one such framework that can build own blockchains. It was called Substrate.
The first token sale ended on 27 October 2017 and the team managed to raise 485,331 Ethereum.
The open-source blockchain focuses on offering advantages of transparent governance, upgradeability, cross-chain composability and scalability. However, there are some disadvantages too. We will take a look here at both pros and cons of the blockchain network.
DOT is a native currency and is used within its ecosystem for transactions, bonding, staking and governance decisions. At the genesis, about 10 million coins were created. Later, the supply was increased by 100 times following a community vote.
Half of the supply was allocated to investors while 8.4 percent was given to the private sale investors during the 2019-20 period. Another 11.6 percent of the DOTs were retained by the Foundation for a simple purpose to boost fundraising efforts in the future. The remaining 30 percent of the coins were given to the Web 3 Foundation to help in the development of the network infrastructure.
In July 2017, the platform managed to raise 3,982.07 Bitcoin in a private sale. It was worth about $43 million then. At the time of sale, the native coins were listed for $125. The sale was not made available for American and Chinese citizens due to regulatory issues.
In more than nine rounds $183.7 million was raised. Currently, the project is being funded by eleven investors including IOSC Ventures and Kenzi Wang, the two most recent investors.
There is no fixed total supply of the coins and the inflationary model is yet to be determined. It is learned to be determined as ~10 percent in the first year and half of this would be used for staking. If the staking conditions are met, all the inflation would go to the validators. Currently, the staking is at ~65 percent and this means it is above the ideal staking ratio.
There are very few statements about the network from governments. No official statements have yet been heard about DOT. However, the currency has a clear utility case with respect to the delegation and staking within the network.
However, it is argued that the security of the currency is somewhat dependent on the centralization around third-party parent companies and common enterprises.
Apart from all these and amid the pros and cons, it is important to note that a new ecosystem has been offered to developers with respect to parachain leasing dynamics, governance and a new design space offering. This means the Polkadot needs to be taken seriously.
Polkadot is different. It is based on parachain dynamics. It offers a new ecosystem to developers and many are serious about it. However, there is hardly any statement from governments around the world. This means the Polkadot risks are true. It cannot be guaranteed completely safe. Its security relies on the dependency on external blockchains. So the safety features are not completely within the control of Polkadot.
