Europe ETF Guide

Updated June 18, 2021

Europe ETF

Europe houses some of the top financial markets, equipped with some of the biggest companies in the world, like Volkswagen AG, Nestle SA, and SAP SE. Investors who look for broader market exposure often turn towards the region and have found European ETFs as an interesting way to diversify their exposure to companies. In addition, they are able to easily mitigate the associated risk of individual stocks.

Europe ETF Key Highlights

Europe ETF Titbits

The US market has been flooded by 38 Europe ETFs, apart from leveraged and inverse ETFs, and less than $50 million in AUM. Data reveals that European equities have underperformed within the broader market in 2020 with respect to total returns, which was 8.9 percent - much lower when compared to the total return of the S&P 500.

However, the best performing Europe ETF was iShares MSCI Denmark ETF. Below are the top three highest performing Europe ETFs:

iShares MSCI Denmark ETF

The performance of iShares MSCI Denmark ETF, or EDEN, was at more than 34 percent over the period of the past year. Its expense ratio was 0.53 percent while the annual dividend yield was 0.42 percent. The company's three-month average daily volume is now 29,394, while the AUM is $174.3 million. Its inception date is 25th January 2012.

This ETF tracks the MSCI Denmark IMI 25/50 index and gauges performances of equities within the country. It is comprised of 46 different securities and large-cap growth stocks and offers exposure to various sectors of the Danish economy. However, it is more inclined towards industrials and healthcare. Its top three holdings are Orsted A/S (wind power plants manufacturer), Vestas Wind Systems A/S (multinational pharmaceutical company), and Novo Nordisk A/S.

iShares MSCI Netherlands ETF

The performance of iShares MSCI Netherlands ETF has been 29.3 percent over the period of the past year and its expense ratio is 0.51 percent. The annual dividend yield of the ETF is 0.74 percent while the three-month average daily volume is 254,371. The AUM is $306.3 million. The ETF was incepted on the 12th of March 1996.

The so-called EWN offers a broad-based performance gauge by tracking the MSCI Netherlands IMI 25/50 index. It comprises 56 equity securities across various sectors in the Dutch economy. The ETF provides more exposure to the IT sector, which is about 36 percent of total holdings within the fund.

This ETF believes in a blended strategy and hence offers a mix of value as well as growth stocks. However, these stocks are mainly from large-cap companies. It is one of the best choices for investors in the Dutch equity market.

The top three holdings of the ETF are Adyen NV (mobile, online and POS solutions provider), class N shares of Prosus NV (tech platform provider), and ASML Holding NV (advanced semiconductor equipment producer).

iShares MSCI Sweden ETF

The performance of iShares MSCI Sweden has been more than 26 percent in the period of the past year and the expense ratio is 0.51 percent. The annual dividend yield of the ETF is nearly 1 percent while the three-month average daily volume is 191,340. Its inception date is 12th March 1996 and the AUM is $435.4 million.

This ETF tracks MSCI Sweden 25/50 index and large-and mid-cap companies in the Swedish equity market. Investors receive broader exposure to the Swedish economy and the primary focus is on the financials and industrials. It has 38 holdings and the top three are class B shares of Volvo AB (motor vehicle manufacturer), class A shares of Atlas Copco AB (industrial tools and equipment manufacturer), and class B shares of Telefonaktiebolage LM Ericsson (multinational telecommunication and networking company).
