The spectacular rise in Bitcoin's popularity has overshadowed the entire crypto ecosystem. However, during this period in Bitcoin's growth, Ethereum also registered some amazing gains. From January 2020 to January 2021, the price of ETH increased by 450%. Since the start of 2021, the price of Ethereum has already increased by 200%. As the second most popular cryptocurrency in the world, the future of ETH looks bright.
Similar to BTC, Ethereum is open-source, decentralised & based on blockchain technology. However, what makes it more efficient is its application of smart contracts. With the introduction of smart contracts, ETH became the first-ever cryptocurrency that allowed programmes to be stored & run on a blockchain.
With smart contracts, once its conditions are met (preset), the stored programmes on the blockchain can then be run. This whole process automates the execution of an agreement.
Through use of ETH technology, thousands of new crypto assets have now been introduced into the market, all aiming to solve problems associated with Bitcoin & bring forward a new solution.
So, in terms of functionality, ETH is far superior to that of BTC as it is not simply a medium for buying or selling. It has an applicable use in the real world!
There are reports that Ethereum 2.0 is to be released soon, and it is believed that it will increase the functionality of its use. With this new upgrade, the coin will shift to a proof-of-stake mechanism from the previous proof-of-work mechanism. According to experts, this will strengthen the coin and remove any threats from new Altcoins such as EOS or Cardano.
Several experts have witnessed a 20% increase in the price of ETH within the past month. As such, it is potentially a good time to begin investing in ETH. In order to evaluate this claim in depth, we will have to understand the history of Ethereum and what we can expect from it in the near future.
First-generation cryptocurrencies did not posses any added functionality besides acting as a means of transaction. They were designed to replace fiat currencies and be used in day-to-day transactions.
When ETH was first released to the public in 2015, it marked the birth of the second generation of cryptocurrencies. Although ETH could be used as an asset & digital currency, just like BTC, it had something else that was not offered by any other platform.
Unlike other coins, ETH allows programming via its blockchain which means it can be used to host applications, games, smart contracts, and more. By using just the ETH platform, several new digital tokens have been released as a result.
The first major increase in the price of ETH/USD saw a move from $10 to a high of $372 in its first year. The second major increase happened in 2018 when it reached a high of $1200. After that, it was unable to maintain this momentum & fell to around $82 by the end of the year.
It then saw a recovery in price during the year 2019, and when the COVID pandemic hit ETH prices tanked again. Having said that, this downtrend proved to be short-lived. It made a remarkable recovery soon after and by the end of December 2020 it was trading at $740 per token.
At the time of writing, the price of ETH is at an all time high & has already broken the barrier of $2200.
One can not predict where prices will go from here with any certainty. This is mainly due to the fact that the financial world is not yet accustomed to the high volatility of crypto assets. In short, one is unable to tame the tiger of crypto by using traditional analytical tools. However, many will still attempt to predict where prices will go from here.
Due to the highly volatile nature of ETH and other crypto assets, no one can predict its future prices with certainty. Those who claim any future price are simply speculating. However, for the sake of argument, let us take a look at what might happen if this uptrend continues.
According to the Coin Price Forecast website, ETH has the potential to reach $6000 by the end of 2025. This would mean that its price would significantly increase from its current trading level.
Then there is a less optimistic forecast from the TradingBeasts website. According to their predictions, the average price of ETH/USD will be around $3500 by the end of 2025 and could rise modestly to $3800 by the end of 2026.
Another website named LongForecast anticipates it closing above the $4000 level by the end of 2025 and potentially reaching $4500 by mid-2026.
The 'Economy Forecast Agency' offers a bearish view on the asset. According to them, ETH might drop to around the $2000 level by the end of 2025. However, they predict a recovery, expecting ETH to climb back to $3000 by the end of 2026.
Finally, let us see what the Fibonacci retracement tool suggests. If we draw it as part of the downtrend from 2020 to 2022, we can see it has already recovered by 100% and is trading at new heights. Based on extended levels, the next targets could be the $4500 level, $5000-$5200 level, $5500 level, $6000, or even $6500 level by the end of 2026.
