You might be familiar with Bitcoin and some of the other major cryptocurrencies, but it may be unlikely that you know about several other types of cryptocurrencies that are available on the market. It is not simply about knowing the name or brand of a cryptocurrency, but instead distinguishing the factors of those digital currencies which make the incredibly unique. In general, there are three major types of digital currencies including Bitcoin, alternative coins, and tokens.
Bitcoin is not simply a type of cryptocurrency; it is the first of its type, the most famous, and the most referred cryptocurrency. Published under the pseudonym, Satoshi Nakamoto, Bitcoin took the investment and financial world by storm, marking the beginning of cryptocurrencies. Bitcoin reached an all-time high in price at almost USD 60,000 per coin within a few years of its launch. The next halving subsequently allowed the first digital currency to skyrocket once more.
Bitcoin works similarly to fiat money except that it is digital, limited in supply, and decentralised. Bitcoin utilises blockchain technology which processes transactions via a decentralised network, thus eliminating the necessity of centralised financial authorities, like central banks. Payments can be made anonymously despite the limited use of Bitcoin and obligation of crypto exchanges to require ID verification from users.
Transactions within the network are processed by individuals or institutional miners that run blockchains using Application-Specific Circuit (ASIC) computers. These miners are rewarded through Proof of Work (PoW) in the form of Bitcoin. Mining activities consume high amounts of electricity, making it only feasible for creation by large-scale companies or in countries with low electricity costs.
However, mining is not the only way to obtain Bitcoin as investors can now simply purchase it through platforms called crypto exchanges. One can use fiat money to fund their cryptocurrency purchases and then either hold or trade Bitcoin. However, since the market is highly volatile, the trading of Bitcoin is not recommended for beginners or inexperienced users.
Altcoin stands for alternative cryptocurrency coins, which refers to those coins which are non-Bitcoin. These coins adopt Bitcoin's notion of blockchain and decentralisation where no centralised authority is involved in transactions. These coins are not issued by any central bank. Altcoins were formerly used as alternative coins to Bitcoin, but some of them are very different from the pioneer of digital currencies. Some altcoins have their own systems and protocols different to those of Bitcoin and other Bitcoin-referring altcoins.
There are two major groups of altcoins that one can recognise on trading platforms or crypto exchanges. The first group is the plain alternative to Bitcoin, including Litecoin, Namecoin, Peercoin, Dogecoin, and so forth. The second group consists of self-supporting cryptocurrencies that run their own systems and protocols, such as Ethereum, Omni, Ripply, Nxt, Counterparty, Waves, and so forth. The world's second most popular cryptocurrency, Ethereum, has even become a platform for other altcoins and crypto projects.
Alternative coins also adopt the idea of limited coin supply, while some of them also apply halving systems for their mining strategies. However, there are currently hundreds, even thousands, of altcoins that have come into the industry, providing people with both flexibility as well as confusion as to which coin to invest in. Fortunately, users have wide access to crypto exchanges and sources where they can easily find information and updates about altcoins as a method to invest in Bitcoin alternatives.
Tokens are a type of cryptocurrency that is run and distributed on other blockchains from those of Bitcoin or Ethereum. It is different to alternative coins, especially with regards to how one can use or spend the tokens. Tokens may be less popular now but they are set to obtain more and more attention in the future as crypto adoption becomes more globally popular.
Instead of being used directly to purchase goods and services with physical vendors, tokens are used on so-called decentralised applications, renowned as dApps. These applications are developed to help run smart contracts that use tokens as fuel. You can spend tokens within the applications in order to reward developers or providers for services or products.
People typically hold tokens instead of trading or spending them as they simply cannot receive enough profit from after-sales. However, tokens are not fully independent digital currencies as transactions need to go through node verification via the blockchain they are run on. Therefore, token users still need to pay for transaction fees, unlike if they are purchasing using Bitcoin or altcoins.
Above are the three different types of cryptocurrencies one should know about. You can start investing in crypto by purchasing coins or tokens through reputable exchanges. Alternatively, you may consider investing in building a crypto mining farm to mine Bitcoin using electricity, or by joining a mining pool.
