Czech Republic Economic Forecast Guide

Updated August 11, 2022

Czech Republic Economic Forecast

Since the revolution of 1989, Czech Rebuplic has transformed itself into a free and vibrant economy. After getting out of communist control, the government passed various policies to move the economy away from the communist model. Some of the reforms made at that time were opening of economy, allowing foreign trade, market-determined prices, and giving state-owned firms to private sectors... In short, all the things required to move towards a capitalist model.

The three pillars of the Czech Republic economy are exports, domestic market demand, and revenue collected from taxes. These 3 things were considered fundamental support which kept the economy growing. COVID-19 meant a drop in these 3 factors, which eventually resulted in the contraction of the Czech economy.

Economic Contraction In 2020

Independent analysts believe an economic contraction of 5.6% happened in 2020. The government points toward a higher number of 6%. However, if we look at the average economic contraction of 7.4% in the EU, it feels like the Czech Republic's economy proved resilient despite the odds.

Uncertainty of future situations and pessimism of the business community remained a central theme in 2020. In the next 2 years, business confidence will remain low as the COVID-19 situation is still very uncertain.

GDP Forecast 2021-2022

Based on how much uncertainty is present regarding novel coronavirus, any recovery in 2021 and 2022 will remain limited. However, no expert is pointing towards negative growth in the next few years.

GDP growth forecast for 2022 is: 4.2%

GDP growth forecast for 2022 is: 4.3%

The year 2020 In Review.

Before the COVID-19 outbreak, the Czech Republic economy was already experiencing slow growth, mainly caused by problems in European countries & Brexit.

On the west side, Germany shares its border with the Czech Republic. Being an economic powerhouse, any slowdown in the German economy can also put a drag on the Czech economy too. Another factor for the slowdown of the Czech economy was Brexit uncertainty which affected the trade between the EU and UK.

In the European Union, Czech Republic was among the first countries to remove lockdown and restrictive measures. Despite the first-mover advantage, economic activity remained subdued with a fall in domestic demand, worker wages, and private consumption.

Inflation Rate (2021-2022)

Domestic demand was further affected by a sudden rise in the inflation rate. Food-related items witnessed price increase which contributed to a sudden rise in the inflation rate. In 2020, the inflation rate was 3.2% when COVID-19 cases were at their peak.

Inflation forecast for 2022: 2.3%

Inflation forecast for 2022: 2%

The central bank of the Czech Republic has set a range of 1-3% for the inflation rate. Based on this range, inflation slightly crossed the upper end of the reliance band, but future forecasts point towards a gradual decline.

Exports Sector

Automotive manufacturing holds the main share of the country's GDP and also accounts for most of the exports.

The effect of COVID-19 on the transport and automotive sector was severe. At that time, oil prices also witnessed a drop as the world was brought to a standstill. For most of 2020, the automotive industry remained slow as the global appetite for new cars did not see any recovery. Even without the pandemic, this industry is already struggling with new technologies (electric cars) and regulatory measures.

Government Debt

The days of being a Soviet state are long gone as the Czech economy is integrated with other economies of the world. Such a high integration comes with a cost, though: COVID-19 resulted in a demand shock (globally) which also disturbed the Czech economy. To support the economy, the government lowered the taxes and increased its spending. This caused the debt to reach 37.6% of GDP in 2020.

Public Debt

A rise in public debt is also expected for 2022 and 2022. As the Czech government experienced a loss of income, it had to rely on external financing to help the economy running smoothly.

Public Debt forecast for 2022: 44% of GDP.

Public Debt forecast for 2022: 48% of GDP.

Unemployment Rate

Despite the job loss from a pandemic, the unemployment rate is still in the country. In 2009, the unemployment rate in the Czech Republic was 2% which increased to 2.7% in 2020. To contain the unemployment rate at such low levels was the direct result of the successful containment of COVID-19 and correct policy measures.

The unemployment rate in the Czech Republic remained below the average seen in all EU countries.

In the near future, the country may face a shortage of workers as the population is rapidly aging.

The unemployment rate forecast for 2022 is 3.4%.

Czech Republic Economic Forecast Verdict

Among all the European Union countries, the Czech Republic performed much better over a range of different economic indicators.

Looking ahead, vaccination programs will improve the situation for the Czech economy. Most of the economic indicators, such as unemployment rate, deficit, public debt, and exports, point towards a rebound of growth.

IMF forecast shows that the Czech economy will grow at the rate of 4.2%-4.3% in 2021 and 2022.
