Best Cfd Dividends Guide

Analysis by Andrew Blumer, Updated Last updated - May 01, 2024

CFD Dividends

CFD dividends are sometimes confusing even though the situation is straightforward compared to holding actual shares. In this article, we will discuss the basic principles of CFD dividends to make you understand them better. We will describe both the positives and negatives of CFD dividends.

Share Dividends

Let us start with understanding holding actual shares, which comes with three dividend dates.

Ex Dividend Date

When trading starts this is the ex-dividend date. One needs to buy it on this day and buying after the date means being declined from receiving the next dividend.

Record Date

Following this is the record date, which is on the fourth day after the dividend date. This is the date to hold the share. The three days gap between the first and second dates are for settling up the share purchase.

Payment Date

The final date is the payment date, and this is when the dividend reaches the shareholder. It is normally a couple of weeks after the second date.

CFD Dividends

Now, let us understand CFD dividends. It is simple and not as complex as many believe. There are several charges and credits to open and hold position and dividend adjustment is another reason for the confusion.

Suppose a company goes for an ex-dividend on August 3 and pays the dividend on September 10, the trader receives CFD dividends on the following working day. To be entitled to the CFD dividends the trader needs to hold the position before the ex-dividend date so for example if the ex-dividend is on Wednesday, the position should be bought at least on Tuesday.

If however, a trader shorts the shares, it is a different scenario as the position is equivalent to the dividend. Hence, a debit will be seen in the account. However, this strategy is good as the trader receives interest on the margin. This means the trader owes the dividend and makes an immediate apparent loss.

A trader needs to consider that the share price may not remain the same on the ex-dividend date. It may reflect the dividends. The price may drop to nearly the dividend amount. However, some traders follow the dividend trading strategy in order to exploit the inefficiencies of the market.

Hence, it can be said that for a long CFD position the trader can expect a real hit before getting the CFD dividends. If one goes for a short position, the profit can offset the dividend debt.

Dates of CFD Dividends

Cum Dividend

When a stock trading is attached with a dividend, it is called cum dividend. The trader gets dividend benefits.

Ex-Dividend

If it is the ex dividend date on which the stock is brough the trader will not receive a dividend. To receive the dividend he needs to acquire it before the ex-dividend date. This is important to qualify. If the ex-dividend is on Wednesday, the acquiring should be at least on Tuesday.

Record Date

On this date, the investor gets recorded as a shareholder of the company and this happens three days after the date of the ex-dividend. The three days’ timescale is taken to settle the purchase. It is an administration factor date and nothing to do by the trader. It is not the date of importance for buying and selling. Sometimes even stocks can be sold a day before the record date.

Payment Date

On the payment date, the trader gets paid. It is generally some weeks after the registration date. You are not allowed to own the stocks on this date. However, it is important to own the stocks of the record date to get paid dividends on the payment date.

It is important for traders to also understand a term called dividend fishing. It is a strategy when a trader buys to qualify for the dividend. He immediately sells thereafter.

CFD Dividends Verdict

CFD dividends are not different from dividends received by stockholders yet it is confusing. In this commentary, we tried to describe the term intricately. However, it is important to understand that smart CFD traders use tricks to earn quick money without investing large capital.

It is suggested to know the three dates carefully - ex-dividend date, record date and dividend payment date. The secrets of earning are here in these dates.

It is important to understand CFD is a leveraged financial instrument and hence profits, as well as losses, are magnified. The loss sometimes even goes beyond the deposited amount. Traders need to evaluate the risk and have a complete understanding of what they are doing.
