Bitcoin vs Ripple

In the world of cryptocurrencies, Bitcoin and Ripple are two of the biggest names. In terms of market capitalisation, Bitcoin tops the list. It is also far above all the competition with respect to overall adoption rates. Ripple ranks fourth, and it is referred to as XRP. Ripple, in fact, is the name of the network and company, whereas XRP is the name of the cryptocurrency. Ethereum and tether are then second and third respectively.

In this article, titled 'Bitcoin vs Ripple', we will take a look at the differences between these two popular cryptocurrencies.

Bitcoin vs Ripple Key Highlights

Bitcoin vs XRP Explained

Bitcoin is based on a public blockchain ledger concept to help support the digital currency for use when making payments for goods and services. It is a public ledger and the network is called Bitcoin cryptocurrency, or BTC. Each transaction is verified by miners and thereafter added to the blockchain. They are then rewarded with Bitcoin.

XRP is a digital payment network and has become popular as a payment settlement, remittance system, or asset exchange, similar to SWIFT in international money transfer systems used by financial intermediaries and banks.

Transaction Validation

Ripple does not use a blockchain mining concept. It uses a uniquely distributed consensus mechanism to validate transactions. Transaction confirmations are instant and considered more reliable than most cryptocurrencies.

Bitcoin mining, on the other hand, is heavily criticised for being energy-hungry. Its mining system consumes a lot of electric power, whereas the Ripple system consumes the least amount of power out of all cryptocurrencies as it follows a mining-free mechanism.

Costs and Time

Bitcoin transaction times are longer than those of Ripple transaction times. It takes several minutes to transfer Bitcoin, and the cost of doing so is high. XRP transactions take just a few seconds, and the cost of such transactions are extremely low. Currently, there are around 21 million Bitcoins in circulation, whereas the supply of XRP is at 100 billion (pre-mined).

Mining and Circulation

Proof-of-work is the main concept behind the Bitcoin system, and new tokens are released by mining. XRPs, on the other hand, are pre-mined. The two processes are very different, and the coin release mechanism each uses is not the same.

Ripple follows a strategy of adding 1 billion XRPs each month to its circulation. Currently, the total supply is around 50 billion. However, any unused tokens are shifted into an escrow account to prevent misuse of the coins.

Bitcoin vs Ripple Example

Paul visited a retail chain store in the United States and made a purchase in USD. He can also buy JPY, GBP, and other currencies with USD. At at later date, he can sell these currencies either for profit or loss.

Bitcoin can also serve the same purpose. Paul can make a payment with digital currency at a retail outlet. He can also buy Bitcoins and sell them later for profit or loss. If Paul wants to send $100 to his friend in the United Kingdom, he could opt to do so with Bitcoin, as sending money through the SWIFT system can be costly.

In the case of Ripple, XRP is used for transferring assets via its network. For instance, sending $1,000 across the Ripple network will be converted to equivalent XRP tokens for its recipient.

Paul's friend would receive XRP tokens after the transaction is verified and authenticated via the Ripple network.

Bitcoin vs Ripple Verdict

Bitcoin, Ethereum, Ripple, Dogecoin, and Litecoin are now highly sought-after assists, and are the primary reason for such popularity is as a result of the fall of other financial markets amid the 2020 coronavirus pandemic.

Bitcoin is the market's leader, currently valued at an all-time high. Simultaneously, XRP of Ripple is moving upward in its popularity and value too as investors seek better returns on their assets. Equities, commodities, mutual funds, EPFs, CFDs and other such financial instruments are failing to offer desired returns. Some of the major cryptocurrencies have even exceeded investor expectations in the latter stages of 2020, and the phenomenon is set to continue.

Both Bitcoin and Ripple have acquired increased attention from investor beginners more recently. However, newcomers are strongly advised to first gain knowledge about cryptocurrencies and blockchain processes before initiating their first trades. The crypto market is one which is highly volatile, and money invested in it is at a higher risk than most other financial products.

Beginners are encouraged to begin trading first with a demo account from a brokerage house, such as eToro, in order to obtain exposure to the market and learn the ins and outs of cryptocurrencies without risking real funds.
