There was a time when Bitcoin was worth more than $60K ($60,000). But today, it is trading about $32,000 per 1 Bitcoin (BTC). With a drop like this, more and more people are becoming sceptical that BTC will ever reach its former state of glory. Is that the reality? Or maybe this drop was just a dip so the BTC can refuel and shoot to the tops once again?
If we look at a bullish forecast made by Tim Draper, it seems that Bitcoin will recover from its low price and eventually target $250,000 within 2 to 3 years (about 2026). Tim Draper is a billionaire and is heavily involved in the financial markets as a venture capitalist. So with such a bullish forecast, it seems like the big players still do not think of the BTC as a lost cause.
If we look at the market, the reality seems to be a lot different. To think that BTC will reach a price tag of $250K when it is not even above $50K right now seems to be a far-fetched dream.
Right now, the BTC has a lot of problems that it needs to address. The first problem is the high transaction cost followed by its basic structure that is not environmentally friendly. It costs a lot of energy to generate BTC, and all the energy spent in this process is a waste. If BTC could find a way to use this energy for something beneficial while also generating BTC along the way, that would be revolutionary.
Draper believes that he is right about his BTC forecast. If we look back at history, Mr Draper made a similar prediction about the BTC about 2008. At that time, the BTC was worth $8000. It looks like Mr Draper was right when he first announced his bold target for the BTC. To buy the BTC around $8K and sell around the $50K to $60K would have earned a lot of money.
But it seems that Mr Draper is still not satisfied with the BTC reaching $60K a few months ago. He is still insisting on the insane target of $250K for the BTC.
If we look at the reasons for this bullish forecast, Draper is eyeing more widespread usage of cryptocurrency in 2024 and 2025. He believes that many retailers will start using a payment processor that accepts Bitcoin within a year or two. An example of such a payment processor is the Open node.
Before the BTC can reach that level of retail acceptance, it will need to address a few things. The transfer between two wallets on the BTC network is not instant and take a lot of time. A person needs to pay more if he wants to make the BTC transfer quickly and hassle-free.
Imagine the following scenario for a minute. You made a few purchases at your local grocery store and then proceeded to pay with Bitcoin. You transferred the BTC to the shop's wallet, but the cryptocurrency does not reach the target within 4-5 minutes. You look again only to find that your transaction is still unconfirmed.
It is common for transactions to take 1-2 days to use a normal transaction fee. To make quick transfers, one needs to pay an insane amount of money as a transaction cost that does not seem feasible. When you are paying with a cash or debit card, the amount is transferred instantly without any transaction cost.
Many cryptocurrencies offer instant payments with minimal transaction cost, but Bitcoin (BTC) is not one of these projects.
If we look at the big brands that are currently accepting Bitcoin, then we get the names such as Overstock, Microsoft, Whole Foods, PayPal, Home Depot, and Starbucks.
Many people, including experts, have started to classify BTC as an asset store of wealth rather than a currency. Market sentiment is not sure if Tim Draper's forecast has any solid backings - Sure, the BTC may very well reach the $250K target, but it could be for other reasons unless Bitcoin solves the problems mentioned above.
Mr Draper is known for getting in early and making a fortune by investing in companies such as SpaceX, Twitter, Tesla, and Skype. There is no viable information about how many Bitcoins he possesses. However, if he has a lot of BTC, it could be considered a conflict of interest because Mr Draper would want the BTC to increase in value.
Does Mr Draper have a conflict of interest when he suggests an insane target of $250K for the BTC? Or is he going to be right once again as he did with Twitter, Tesla, and few other investments.
