Remember how everyone was a crypto expert when Bitcoin was on its bullish run? Well, things have changed after a series of negative events for Bitcoin (BTC) and the crypto ecosystem as a whole. A few months ago, the price of 1 BTC was more than $60,000, and today, it is only about $32,000.
This represents a decrease of more than 47% in the BTC within a few months. Due to this sharp decline in the BTC/USD price, volumes related to the cryptocurrencies and especially BTC have also dropped by more than 40%. All the top crypto exchanges such as Kraken, Bitstamp, Coinbase, and Binance reported a significant drop in the trading volume.
CryptoCompare provides important data about the crypto ecosystem. According to their experts, the drop in the trading volume can be attributed to the drop in value of various coins and reduced volatility. Even today, the volatility is often higher in crypto than other assets; however, if we compare it with the usual volatility of the cryptocurrencies, the current volatility is only a fraction of what normally is seen in the markets.
As mentioned earlier, the current price of BTC/USD is around $32,000, but in June 2021, the BTC made a low of $28,000. On 22 June 2021, the trading volume of the BTC was only about $138 billion, which was almost 42% less than in May 2021.
The reasons for the price drop in BTC/USD could include several arguments. The reason that caused this mess in the BTC can be lead back to China. Over the last few years, China has been cracking down on cryptocurrency and limiting the freedom it once enjoyed. The most recent limitations imposed on the cryptocurrency miners and the industry in China proved to be the last straw.
As a result, BTC/USD crashed and dragged down the other crypto coins along with it. The GPU units also saw a significant reduction in their price. In crypto mining, the use of GPU is widespread, and current crypto limitations in China caused the GPU prices also to dropdown.
Right now, China and other top countries have not yet outright banned the BTC or any other leading cryptocurrencies, but if we look at the current trend, it does not look good. The way things are going, every central bank will have its own digital currency soon, and then there will be no space for decentralised currencies such as the BTC.
So what exactly caused the drop in BTC/USD? The main Chinese province, which accounted for almost 60% of the total mining power of the BTC, had to shut down on government orders. The Chinese government is all set to launch its own digital currency which the central bank will back. Right now, there is no digital currency that any government or central bank backs.
China might not be the only country to move towards digital currency. Many countries such as Germany, UK, the USA, and others have the technology for a digital currency. If these countries also move towards digital money, then things could get real ugly for BTC, ETH, and others.
If we look at the Financial Action Task Force's view of cryptocurrencies, it is also not supportive of the industry as a whole.
In the real world, things do not seem well for the BTC/USD, but the crypto experts believe that if China is no longer a hub for cryptocurrencies, another country will take its place. If this happens, it will be business as usual within a short time.
The central banks and the governments are not happy about BTC and other crypto assets. What will be the next move of the authorities? Only time will tell.
