Female unemployment rates around the world have increased dramatically due to COVID-19.
Male unemployment in the United Kingdom was 4.7 percent in the three months to July 2021, while female unemployment was 4.4 percent. Male unemployment rates in late 2020 were at their greatest since September 2015, while female jobless rates were at their highest since Autumn 2016.
Women's unemployment rate - unadjusted monthly number in the United States, September 2021. The unadjusted unemployment rate for women in the United States was 4.5 percent in September 2021. This was a marginal decline from the previous month's figure of 5.8%.
Generally, the unemployment rate includes both men and women who are willing to work and actively seeking employment but cannot get a job. The unemployment rate which only focuses on one gender (women) is called the women's unemployment rate.
In February 2021, about 379K jobs were added to the US economy. As a result, the unemployment rate which was about 6.3% in January, saw a minor decline of 0.1% and reached 6.2% the next month. On the surface, new job creation and the eventual drop in the unemployment rate may look good, but if we take a closer look, it seems that this information is not giving us the full picture. In fact, the only thing the unemployment rate tells us is what is currently going on.
If we look at the data of the past year, it seems that millions of people left the labour market, and as a result, they are not included in the unemployment rate. About 4.2 million people from the US are no longer a part of the labour force. This means that if these millions of people were also included in the evaluation of the unemployment rate, then the actual rate would be a lot higher than the current numbers.
It can become subjective when understanding who can be considered unemployed and who is not. If a person left the labour force and does not have any motivation of joining again, then what is the point of including that person in the final count? But once again, how can one judge whether a person is motivated to find a job or not? Of course, we have to come up with a system and criteria to make that distinction.
In the USA, the government is also paying support payments in the form of cheques for deserving individuals. Over the short term, this move would have helped a lot, but over the long term, it will not achieve anything. The basic step is to stimulate the economy once again and get it back on track.Once the economy starts to perform better, problems like the unemployment rate are automatically taken care of.
The economic impact of the pandemic was not just limited to the USA. In fact, people all around the world experienced a unique phenomenon. Governments tried to contain the spread of COVID-19 through containment and lockdown measures with little thought about the economic impact of these decisions.
As the months passed by, businesses and employers realised that they could not keep paying money (wages) to their employees who were not working. The business activities and the domestic market were also weak, which meant that businesses had to downsize.
As a result, the unemployment rate around the world jumped and this corroded the financial outlook of the countries and the individuals.
To say that only those who are salaried individuals took a hit during the COVID-19 would be an understatement. In fact, even the businesses took a hit as many sectors of the economy were forced to shut down completely or partially in some cases.
The only way to bring things back to something resembling normalcy is to totally remove the lockdown or containment measures. This will allow the economy to start functioning normally and will reduce the unemployment rates somewhat.
The businesses which were impacted more severely should be supported by subsidies, tax reliefs, and even payments.
As for the COVID-19 pandemic, the government will have to look for some other ways of containing the virus rather than imposing large scale containment measures. For starters, there are many other ways, including masks, social distancing, and vaccination.
Today, the COVID-19 has mutated, and a new variant termed delta is wreaking havoc around the world. The delta variant of COVID-19 was first found in India, and it seems that India totally failed to contain this new deadly mutation.
Last but not least, the government could also undertake new infrastructure projects or something else that could create new jobs in the economy. Even if the jobs are not permanent and only partial, it will help the common person a great deal.
