We found 11 online brokers that are appropriate for Trading BRICS Investment Platforms.
BRICS is an acronym for Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa. The term was originally coined by Goldman Sachs economist Jim O'Neill in 2001 when South Africa was not yet a part of the group. It was then said the four economies would collectively dominate the world economy by 2050. In 2010, South Africa joined BRIC.
For a couple of decades, the economies of Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa were the fastest-growing in the world due to various reasons, like abundant natural resources, favourable demographics and low labour costs.
Goldman never argued that the five nations would form a political alliance like the European Union. He did not even coin the idea that the BRICS nations would try for a trading association, but he believed that these nations may have the potentiality to emerge as a strong economic block. He said that the forecasts are optimistic and simultaneously rely on significant policy assumptions.
It was believed that the countries would bring political powers and leaders to attend summits together as well as encourage them to act for each others' interests.
Goldman noted that the gross domestic product was to rise 1.7 percent in 2002 and the four countries' growth was forecasted to be faster than the Group of Seven - Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, UK and US. He outlined his views in detail in his paper entitled Building Better Economic BRICS.
A year later, his colleagues Roopa Purushothaman and Dominic Wilson released a follow-up report titled Dreaming with BRICS: The Path to 2050. It was claimed the four nations could grow larger than the G7 and with respect to income per capita, that the largest global powers may not be the richest in a time period of about four decades.
The report entitled BRICS and Beyond was later published in 2007 by Goldman himself and he talked about the growth potential, its sustainability and the rise and environmental impact of the four growing economies.
Gradually the growth in the four economies lost speed following the 2008 global financial crisis. In 2014, the oil price collapsed. A year later the four countries no longer were attractive investment venues. As an aftermath, the funds which were aimed for these economies were either merged with other investment vehicles or shut down.
Goldman merged the funds with the Emerging Markets Equity Fund after a loss of assets by 88 percent following a peak in 2010. In an SEC filing, he mentioned that significant asset growth is no longer being expected in the future. A report published by Bloomberg revealed his fund lost 21 percent in just five years.
Today, BRIC is a generic term. BRICLab was founded by the Columbia University to offer a platform to students for the examining of domestic, foreign and financial policies of BRIC members.
The BRIC has traveled a long way. The members have always focused on financial institutions reform and improving the economic situation in the world. In Russia the attendees of the four nations met for the first meeting back in 2009.
The BRICS area covers more than 39,000,000 square kilometers and it is about 27 percent of the global land surface. Turkey, Mexico, Indonesia, Bangladesh and Argentina have expressed interest in full membership. Pakistan, Greece, Syria, Sudan, Nigeria, Iran and Egypt have expressed interest in joining the group too.
BRICS was initially coined by Goldman Sachs economist, Jim O'Neill,in 2001 as BRIC which included Brazil, Russia, India and China. South Africa joined the group in 2010 and the new acronym was BRICS, as we know it today.
Goldman forecasted the countries would collectively dominate the global economy by 2050. However, with the global financial crisis of 2008 and the collapse of oil prices in 2014, his vision changed due to the slowing down of the economies. His BRIC-focused funds lost about 88 percent of assets. The funds were either shut down or merged with other funds thereafter.
