We found 11 online brokers that are appropriate for Trading Wall Street Stock Investment Platforms.
Wall Street is the Financial District of Lower Manhattan in NYC and hosts the two largest stock exchanges - the NASDAQ and the New York Stock Exchange. A couple of more major exchanges are headquartered here, including the New York Mercantile Exchange, the New York Futures Exchange and the New York Board of Trade.
Prop trading is alternately called proprietary trading. It happens when a trader trades financial instruments such as derivatives, commodities, currencies, bonds and stocks with the firm's own money or the so-called Nostro account, and not with the money of depositors, to make a profit. Various strategies are used like statistical arbitrage, index arbitrage, volatility arbitrage and global macro trading which is similar to a hedge fund and fundamental analysis.
Flow trading is just the opposite of prop trading. Firms in it trade bonds, stocks, commodities, stocks and other financial instruments with the deposits of clients and not by using their own funds. The investment banks consider it as a good source of profit. It even boosts the prop trading profits of the firm through information access on client activities. Moreover, the firm can also serve as a counterparty to the client trades and earn revenue from the bid-offer spread.
Agency trading usually involves futures, equity options and cash equities which are listed and traded on the Wall Street exchanges with limited exceptions. NASDAQ, NYSE, CME and other exchanges are natural market makers and do not require a flow trader for an intermediary. However, the large-sized trades are the exception. These are known as block trades and take place off-exchange. In fact, these utilise traditional flow traders.
The investment banks avoid agency trading. These banks send the orders of investors directly to the exchanges.
The agency traders are also known as sales traders in cash equities as they lack a flow trading book with market risk along with the P&L. They are part sales. They advise asset managers about their execution strategies - like how to trade in bulk without moving markets.
The agency traders even take orders from clients and send these to the exchanges.
Let us understand this concept with an example. A sales trader at investment bank, Morgan Stanley, covers asset manager Vanguard which is seeking 100 shares of Tesla. The order is received and passed on to the exchange that reveals the price at which Vanguard bought the shares. Morgan Stanley gets a commission based on per share.
The term Agency Trading should not be here confused with the trading bonds issued by the Government Sponsored Agencies, which are called Agencies Trading. However, the government bonds are also called Agency debentures and these also do not trade on the exchanges.
Electronic trading is basically a electronic trading process. It is comparatively cheaper and trading in margins is slim. Electronic trading is similar in the sense that an algorithm or a platform is used. Each bank has its own platform and traders can directly place orders without calling the bank.
Electronic trading works outside an exchange like FX Spot where the participants trade with banks, hedging the risk through electronic platforms. It must be noted here that electronic trading is not very compatible with credit trading.
Electronic trading is also commonly known as online trading. It is usually mobile-friendly to facilitate trading on the go.
Wall Street is almost synonymous with trading. It is an eight-block-long street in NYC's Manhattan and runs between South Street, East River and Broadway. It became business orientated in the early 19th century. Today, it hosts a couple of major stock exchanges including NASDAQ and the New York Stock Exchange.
In this article titled Wall Street Trade, we discussed the four major types of trading and these are prop trading, flow trading, agency trading and electronic trading.
Over the period of the past decade or so, the electronic trade has gained immense popularity. It is online trading and comparatively cheaper. It excludes salespeople and the human involvement. Traders can directly place orders through their computer or smartphone.
