We found 11 online brokers that are appropriate for Trading VIXX Volatility Investment Platforms.
VIXX is an abbreviation for Cboe Volatility Index. It is a real-time index and represents relative strength expectations of changes in the near-time price of the S&P 500 index (SPX). It generates volatility projections for a period of 30-days.
The Chicago Board Options Exchange (CBOE) created the VIXX and it is an important index for providing a quantifiable measure of risk and sentiments. It is maintained by the Cboe Global Markets.
With VIXX Volatility Index one can statistically measure the degree of variation in the trading price of a financial instrument over a specific period of time. Let us have a look at an interesting example. On 27 September 2018, the shares of Eli Lilly & Co. and Texas Instruments Inc. closed around $106.89 and $107.29 per share respectively. The closings were very similar with respect to the price levels.
Now, let us have a look at the price movements of the two over a period of the past 30 days or so. It is found that Texas Instruments Inc. had comparatively wider price swings and it also had comparatively higher volatility over the period.
If the observation period is further expanded to about three months, the trend is seen to be reversed. Eli Lilly & Co. is seen having a wider range for price swings and it had higher volatility too.
Volatility measures such price movement magnitudes that are experienced by a financial instrument over a specific period. The volatility is high with dramatic price swings.
Volatility is measured using performing statistical calculations on the prices over a certain period. Computing various statistical numbers is done like variance, standard deviation and mean on price data sets.
It can also be measured by inferring the value as implied by prices in the derivative instrument option as its price relies on the probability.
It is calculated by using standard SPX options expiring the third Friday of each month and weekly SPX options expiring every Friday. It is good to note here that only SPX options that have an expirey date between 23 and 37 days are used. 23 and 37.
The formula is slightly complex. It estimates the volatility expected for the S&P 500 index. The weighted prices of calls and puts of various SPX are aggregated over a wider range of strike prices.
The origin of VIXX dates back to 1993. It was then calculated as a weighted measure of implied volatility at the call and put options of eight of the S&P 100 during a limited period of activity in the derivatives market as well as in its growing stages.
With the maturity of the derivatives markets, the Cboe partnered with Goldman Sachs in 2003. The methodology was updated to calculate the volatility differently. A wider set of options thereafter was used based on the S&P 500, a broader index. It was an expansion to get a more accurate view of the expectations of future volatility.
VIXX introduced the concept of using volatility as a tradable asset. In March 2004, the first such ETF contract was launched by Cboe. Two years later, the VIXX options were launched.
The VIXX-linked instruments came up with a new asset class and these allowed true volatility exposure. These are used by hedge fund managers, large institutional investors and active traders for portfolio diversification.
Cboe offers several variants apart from the standard VIXX index and these include Cboe Short-Term Volatility Index, the Cboe S&P 500 3-Month Volatility Index and Cboe S&P 500 6-Month Volatility Index.
VIXX cannot be bought directly. It can only be bought through options or futures contracts. It can also be invested through VIXX-based ETPs like ProShares VIX Short-Term Futures ETF, the Velocity Shares Daily Long VIX Short-Term ETN and the iPath Series B S&P 500 VIX Short-Term Futures ETN.
Active traders with their own trading strategies uses VIXX values to price the derivatives based on high beta stocks.
The VIXX is used to understand the volatility expectations of a market for a future period of 30 days. It is one of the best ways to measure risk, stress and fear level while making an investment.
