We found 11 online brokers that are appropriate for Trading Investing Platforms.
UK investment platforms have seen an increase in account openings during the financial market crisis and related economic effects of COVID-19.
Is this the perfect time to invest? Global shares have been extremely volatile and have suffered severe and sharp losses due to the virus. Despite the tragedy of the pandemic, more and more people are starting to invest. To track this, we measured new opened accounts in the period from February to March.
Investment platforms are popular websites in the UK that allow investors to trade shares and build portfolios. You have different account types such as: general accounts, retirement accounts, and stocks and shares ISA accounts.
eToro had outstanding growth throughout 2020. eToros customer based grew from around 12,000,000 to around 17 million, an incredible growth of over 41%. This growth was helped by eToros copy trading platform and a huge suge in interest in trading online during lock down.
AJ BELL saw more than 17,000 new accounts during the first three months of 2020. These accounts originated from its YOULINVEST consumer platform. Overall, the customer growth rate was 9%.
VANGUARD saw its client base grow by 25% from February to March. There was a total of 20,000 new accounts. These were strong results.
INTERACTIVE INVESTOR reported a growth of 119% in new accounts opened from mid-February until the end of March. These were ISA accounts. They also reported an increase of 47% in retirement accounts.
THE SHARE CENTRE noticed an increase of 193% in opened accounts from February 2020 to March 2020. Comparing this March with March 2019, they've had an increase of 121% in new opened accounts.
LLOYD'S BANKING GROUP had an interesting scenario. From January to February, it saw an 8% growth on new accounts. From February to March, this ratio grew to 269%.
The data shows other interesting details as well. The demographic of investors has been changing. The average investor's age is 42 years old currently, while the average investor's age in 2019 was 48.
The virus challenged people's finances, as well as their lives. There have been massive shortages in staff during the pandemic, and 25% of employers expect permanent reductions. Also, we are on the brink of a recession that could be here to stay. We also need to point out that 4 million people are on the government's retention scheme. This might explain the sudden activity of investors, but what fueled all of this?
The market tanked during the pandemic and investors saw this as a good entry point for their long-term investments. Also, the rest of the people who had extra cash available used it to buy shares on discounted prices to hold long-term. These shares are now a good deal.
March is a perfect period for investing companies as they try to acquire new customers who try to use their maximum yearly ISA allowance. During this period, all investment firms compete to get these new customers.
Investing platforms allow you to open an investing account straight from your mobile device. It is now easier than ever to invest. You can be online and trading equity right from your phone, and you can sign up in just a few minutes. Vanguard will accept a minimal deposit of £500. If you do not have it, you can finance it over a 5 month period.
Investing depends more on your situation than on the market's situation. If your financial goals include investing, and if you are in the proper condition to invest, then you should do it. Investing, per se, does not depend on the market's trend. Investing is not about trying to perfectly time the market. Investing is not about trying to predict the next market direction.
It does not matter if it is a bear market or a bull market. Investing is about principles and opportunities. If you invest, do it in the long-term, and take into consideration the market's long-term direction. It is better if you are here for the long game. There are less risks and more secured returns.
If you want to get started with investing, you are better off if you first pay off your debts. Then, you can open an account for yourself and trade by yourself. If you are not sure how to trade and invest, there are pre-made portfolios already available on most investing platforms, and you can always talk to a financial advisor.
Apart from the actual capital that you will need to invest, you should be informed about other fees and costs. When you invest through online platforms, rest assured that you will always be charged, but how much depends on you and the platform's competition. Some charge monthly fees, some charge for each trade. The more activity you have, the more you will pay these fees, and they do add up as time goes by. With the growth of these investing platforms, there are a lot of options. An investor must evaluate them based on the following criteria: fees, customer service, accessibility, and type of investment.
