Unlike Dax which includes the top 30 companies, TecDax only includes the top 30 technology companies from Germany. Since it only includes the companies from the technology sector, it is behind the Dax in terms of market capitalization. Although it is below in terms of market cap, it is still an important index that tracks the performance of the German technology sector.
Some of its constituents are Aixtron, Freenet AG, Software AG, TeamViewer, Nordex SE, and others. Since it is a total of 30 tech-based companies, it also offers instant diversification & instant exposure to top tech stocks from Germany. There is no doubt that we are living in the age of data... In the coming years, many parts of our life could be managed by A.I. and tech-based solutions. So it makes sense to invest in the technology sector.
If you are just focusing on US-based tech stocks, then you are missing on greater returns. There are many companies that have the potential & many are already well-established. TecDax constituents are all famous & if one buys these stocks at dips & cheap prices, there is a big potential for insane ROI.
One of the constituents of this index is TeamViewer. This is famous software that allows one to establish a remote connection to another device. It is really popular among tech support as it allows one to control the other party's PC/laptop through the software. There are many other uses of TeamViewer.
So as you can see, the German tech-based companies are famous too & have the potential to give better ROI if invested wisely.
Let's take a look at the past returns & history of this German tech index and see how it performs against other indices.
During the year 2018, German technology stocks remained strong but could not maintain the optimism. As a result, the index moved up by 26% and then dropped down and ended the year with a -4% change. Money could be made in 2018 if one had bought the technology shares at the bottom and sold once a reasonable gain was made. As they say, buy at the bottom and sell at the top. Using this trading philosophy, one could earn from the German-tech sector even in the Year 2018.
In 2019, TecDax performed really well as its main constituents ended the year on a positive note. As a result, the German index managed to gain 27% by the end of 2019. Considering that the index is based on 30 companies, an ROI of 27% with the diversity provided is not a bad deal at all. In fact, this is a really amazing return with little risk.
The year 2020 was a wild ride for the German tech stocks. In March 2020, the index turned bearish and made a new low at that time, the index was down by -29% from the yearly opening price. From there, the index made a spectacular comeback and ended in 2020 with a return of +6.53%.
Let's take a look at the chart of this index and see what's going on:
During 2020, the index was trading inside a triangle pattern. During that time, the index made a low of 2128.29. An intense battle between bulls & bears resulted in zig-zag price action with no winner. Then in 2021, we finally saw a break upside the triangle. The upper trendline of the triangle was around the 3,200 region which also happened to be strong resistance.
If the price comes back to retest a trendline, it is considered a more strong signal. In this case, the price retested the trendline once again and then bounced back. This signaled that the trendline as well as the 3200 level is now acting as a resistance.
Based on the upside break of the triangle, we consider it a bullish signal. After measuring the possible target, we are expecting the TecDax to hit 4343 during 2021. Although we have mentioned that the target could be achieved in 2021, it might take longer if we do not see fast-paced price action.
Triangle Pattern (Forecast Target) = 4,343
Signal Type = Bullish
From the current level of 3250, the index has the potential to gain 22%. If the index moves +22%, then it means that the constituents (tech-based stocks) are bound to rise too.
Monthy view: If we take a look at the monthly chart & apply Elliott wave theory, then we see a potential target of around 4300.
Based on both triangle measured target as well as Elliott wave theory, a bullish move is expected which would see this german tech index hit the area around 4300. Since the same level is seen by using two different approaches, we consider this a strong bullish signal.
Also if we draw Fibonacci retracement from 3302 (high) to 2128 (low), we can see that the level of 4300 is close to the 200% retracement level (4444).
On the way to our target of 4,300... These resistance zones are present: 3607 (127%), 3770 (141%), 4005 (161.8%) and the 4444 (200%).
