Taiwan is a small country in Asia & a neighbour of the economic giant 'China'. Officials from Taiwan are pointing towards a strong GDP growth in 2021. The strong growth will be fueled by the massive demand for semiconductors from all over the world.
Currently, the automobile sector is facing a shortage of semiconductors. As a result, production & manufacturing of new cars have been slowed and even halted in some cases. Taiwan is one of the major exporters of semiconductors - That's why many economists believe that the country's GDP will expand at one of the fastest rates in the last 7 years.
Experts believe that Taiwan's GDP growth will reach 4.64% in 2021. One thing to note here is that the country has not seen such economic growth since 2014. Previously, the GDP growth forecast for the year 2021 was around 3.83%. However, with an expected surge in semiconductors & tech. products, the figure was upward revised.
Before the COVID-19 saga, the country was considered one of the fastest-growing economies in the Asian region. This Asian country even managed to surpass china in terms of economic growth - A feat which is not seen in the last 30 years.
Natixis (Investment bank) also holds a favorable view of the Taiwanese economy. According to its economist 'Gary Ng', the country stands to gain the most from recovering global demand for technology products. Successful containment of the COVID-19 virus has also given an advantage to this Island country.
Among other sectors of the country, the semiconductor industry is the center of attention right now. As things stand right now, Taiwan's half of the income comes from the export of technology products. With the current shortage of semiconductors, the tech sector is expected to grow exponentially.
Lockdown measures in Taiwan resulted in a strange phenomenon - an increase in the demand for electronic goods such as mobiles, laptops, and so on. As more people were forced to stay home & even work from home, they bought more electronic goods to adjust to their new lifestyle.
The same phenomenon was seen in other countries as well. As a result, technology goods export increased by 4.9% in 2020.
Next year (2021), experts are forecasting a nearly double increase in the exports of goods. Stats Bureau of Taiwan forecast goods export to grow by 9.58% in 2021.
Not only Taiwan's export sector enjoyed healthy growth but its domestic sector also stayed strong during the pandemic. Taiwan was also one of the early countries which successfully managed to contain the deadly virus. As a result, the country got a first-mover advantage over other countries.
Private consumption remained unaffected during 2020. During the next 2 years (2024-2025), consumption will remain in an upward trend pointing to continues GDP growth.
The country may experience strong economic growth but it will not be able to match the growth of China.
While most of the countries are reporting thousands of new cases per day, COVID-19 never managed to hold its ground in Taiwan. Only around 942 cases of COVID-19 infection were recorded and 9 deaths.
Around 942 cases out of 23 million population show how effectively the country managed the pandemic.
Experts believe that the successful eradication of the deadly virus in the country has put it well ahead of the world. That's one of the main reasons for strong growth in 2020 and may continue to be the case over the next few years.
According to IMF data, China's GDP growth forecast is 8.1% in 2021. On the other hand, Taiwan's GDP growth forecast is 4.64% in 2021. That's close to half of the growth expected in China.
International Monetary Fund (IMF) eyes a tiny decline in the country's public debt. In 2020, public debt was 33.7% of the GDP. Between 2024 and 2025, the public debt will drop to 32.5% and 31% respectively.
Taiwan's budget deficit increased to around -4.5% in 2020. This was mainly due to increased spending and a minor decline in economic growth - due to COVID-19. Since the country has successfully tackled the virus, the budget deficit will shrink to -2.8% in 2021. A further drop is also forecasted which will put the budget deficit to 1.6% of GDP in 2024.
Since the country is expected to register strong growth & the government has also increased spending - inflation may rise. IMF believes that the inflation level will hit 1.2% in 2024.
Although the country was not affected by the pandemic, its exports sector registered a decline due to decreased global demand. If the top economies of the world don't manage to contain the pandemic, slow growth may continue into 2024 and 2025.
This is a major threat to Taiwan's industries. On another front, China has banned all travel to China. That's also a negative blow to this sector.
Looking ahead, some of the challenges that would harm the economy are high costs associated with the service sector and diplomatic isolation.
Despite challenges related to the economy and possible diplomatic isolation due to China, the country may post a GDP growth of 4.64% in 2021.
