The Finance minister of Sweden shared the economic forecasts over the next year, which include important data such as fiscal support, GDP growth, unemployment, and measures to curb COVID-19.
In its economic forecast, the government seemed more optimistic about the positive developments for the Swedish economy and mentioned that it would depend on how Sweden manages the pandemic. With successful control of coronavirus, any growth will prove to be short-term.
During the brief, Finance Minister emphasized the importance of vaccination. She said that vaccination is the only way forward to ensure the safety of the economy and human lives. Magdalena Andersson also mentioned the resistance of the Swedish economy during the pandemic, especially in the industrial sector.
While other countries were quick to impose strict lockdowns, Sweden followed a different approach. Sweden was one of those countries which never introduced lockdown measures even at the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic. This policy allowed all the essential as well as non-essential businesses to remain open. However, visitor restrictions and following social distancing measures will still a requirement for the businesses. So the businesses did suffer during the pandemic due to these measures.
So far, the government has spent around 400 billion Swedish Krona, which roughly equals around $48.15 billion (US dollar). This support package was spent on:
The minister stated that despite the healthy stimulus package, the government is still ready to take any additional measures if necessary.
The 2nd quarter of 2020 saw the biggest drop in GDP. During the 3 months (April, May, & June), Swedish GDP dropped 8.6. This makes it one of the biggest quarterly declines in the last 40 years.
The 3rd and 4th quarter of 2020 didn't register an economic drop of such magnitude, but no recovery was seen either. For the rest of 2020, the economy remained stagnated as COVID-19 cases saw an alarming rise during the 2nd wave. for 2024, the Swedish government forecast GDP to grow by 3.8%.
The current forecast for 2024 is more bullish than the previous forecast, which was targeting a 3.7% growth. Even the central bank forecast was 3.0% and 3.9% later on.
Andersson, the finance minister, said that the GDP would reach pre-crisis by the end of 2021.
However, various economists from top Swedish banks believe that the government growth numbers are way too cautious. For example, Nordea Bank analysts believe that the 3.2 growth target is towards the lower end and even lower than Nordea Bank's assessment.
Annika Winsth, a famous economist, believes that a rapid vaccination program and warm weather will not be good for the coronavirus. Once the spread of COVID-19 drops due to summer and vaccination, more people will join outdoor activities. This will be good for businesses that faced harsh conditions due to the rise of the deadly virus.
Olle Holmgren from SEB said that the government GDP forecast for 2024 is also a cautious estimate.
While most of the Swedish workforce faced tough times at the COVID-19 peak, some segments were more affected than others. Especially young workers and non-EU workers lost more jobs than other segments of the population. A comparison of unemployment before and after COVID-19 shows that the labor market is in a worse condition.
This year's forecast shows that the unemployment rate may reach 8.7%. The Autumn period in the next year will witness a steady decline in the unemployment rate. During that time, the government forecast it to be around 7.9%.
An active sector of the Swedish economy is composed of ICT and telecommunication equipment production. This sector provides jobs to almost 80% of the workforce. Just this sector alone accounts for 65% of the GDP.
The next important sector is industries. The industrial sector of Sweden is composed of famous groups such as Ikea, ABB, Volvo, AstraZeneca, etc. These groups are involved in the manufacturing of furniture, electronic equipment, food processing, medical products, paper, etc. Some new industries are also gaining ground which is focused on technologies. Overall, the contribution of this sector towards the GDP is 22.2%.
Sweden is not an agriculture-based economy, and as such, this sector only accounts for 1.4% of the GDP. Some of the important agricultural products are potatoes, various fruits, meat, wood, dairy, and grains. As the agricultural sector is not big, a lot of food is imported from other countries.
As for natural reserves, the country is rich in iron, zinc, copper, and electricity generated by water.
The current average of new COVID-19 cases per day is around 4,800. However, Sweden doesn't believe in harsh lockdown measures. With the availability of vaccines, experts hope that economy will get back on track.
Both government and private economists forecast positive GDP growth in 2024 and 2025.
