We found 11 online brokers that are appropriate for Trading Stocks Bid And Ask Investment Platforms.
Stocks have a bid or ask price at any given point. It shows the cost of buying shares or selling the asset. Moreover, numbers are mentioned just next to the quotes of bid and ask telling you how many shares of the stock can be traded at a given price. The difference between the bid price and ask price is called the spread.
It is also alternatively called bid and offer. Bid and ask are the two-way price quotes showing the best price of buying or selling shares of an asset at any given point. Bid simply refers to the maximum potential price a buyer wishes to pay to buy shares of stock. Conversely, ask is the minimum potential price a seller wishes to take for selling the shares of the same asset or security.
Hence, a trade takes place when a buyer wishes to pay the best price offered to him or a seller wishes to take the highest bid to sell the shares of an asset.
The bid and ask difference is called spread and it is an indicator of the liquidity of a security. Liquidity is higher when the spread is narrow and liquidity is decreased when the spread is wide.
Suppose the bid and ask quotations for ABC stock are $10.50 and $10.55 respectively, a willing buyer may pay the bid price to buy the shares. Similarly, a willing seller wishing to receive the price quote may sell the shares of ABC at the prevailing price of $10.50.
The market maker benefits from the spread. In the above example, we saw the bid and ask price quotes as $10.50 and $10.55 respectively for the stocks of ABC Company. The difference between the two quotes is $0.05 and this is the profit of the market maker for one share. If 100 shares are traded, the calculation would be multiplication of 100 and $0.05. If 1,000 shares are traded, the spread is the multiplication of 1,000 and $0.05.
It is important to note here that the bid and ask spread varies across markets and securities - for example, the blue-chip companies have a narrow spread while a small-cap stock may have a wider spread.
Moreover, the spread widens up during market turmoil or periods of liquidity as traders are found to be less willing to pay beyond a certain threshold. Similarly, sellers may not sell below a certain level.
When the bid price and ask price are very close together, it means the market or the stock has enough liquidity. In other words, if the spread is very narrow, it reveals high liquidity. Investors find this situation helpful as the buying and selling of the stocks is easier because there are enough buyers and sellers in the market to trade the stock.
Alternatively, if the spread or the difference between the bid and ask is wide, it means less liquidity. In such a condition, there are fewer buyers and sellers in the market to trade the stock.
It is basically set by the market. In other words, the decisions of actual buying and selling of stock set the bid and ask price. If the demand for a stock is more than the supply, it means an upward shift of the bid and ask price quotes.
If the demand of a stock is less than the supply, it means a downward shift of the bid and ask price quotes.
We broadly discussed buying price, selling price and spread in this article titled Stocks Bid vs. Ask. It is shown that the two price quotes are determined by the market based on the actual buying and selling of a stock and that the spread benefits market makers, with narrow spread meaning high liquidity and wide spread meaning low liquidity of the stock or a market.
The financial market is simply based on the theory of demand and supply under any given condition. If the confidence of buyers is decreased, the market becomes a seller market where there are lots of sellers with very few buyers. The opposite happens when the buyers are confident in a stock or the market.
