Mr. Steve Jobs co founded Apple in 1976. However, he was fired from the business he co-founded in 1985. At that time, the company had the name Apple. After a heated board meeting, the decision was to leave, and at this time he sold his shares. Shortly after his departure he pursued other businesses, and in this venture he worked with Pixar where he made his first billion. Jobs invested $10 million in Pixar, a spinoff from Lucasfilm, in February 1986 – $5 million for exclusive rights to technology developed by Lucasfilm's computer graphics division, and another $5 million to fund the company. Employees and managers had a 30% stake in the company, with him owning the remaining 70%. The short film Tin Toy, which received an Academy Award in 1988, was Pixar's breakthrough moment in animation.
Toy Story was Pixar's first feature film, released as part of an agreement in which Disney committed to co-finance and distribute the picture. Toy Story opened at $39 million in its first five days and went on to gross $191 million in the United States and $362 million worldwide. It was the highest-grossing film in the United States in 1995, earning over $50 million more than Pocahontas at the time. Between his original purchase/financial commitment with Lucasfilm and some additional investments along the road, he was believed to have contributed a total of $60 million to Pixar at the time. In less than a decade, Steve Jobs had grown his investment in Pixar almost 20 times, resulting in a total compounded annual growth rate of approximately 35 percent on the $60 million. The purchase was an all-stock agreement, making Steve Jobs Pixar's biggest shareholder (he held 50.6 percent of Pixar at the time). He owned more than 70% of the business when Pixar's first proxy statement was submitted in 1997.
It is easy to forget the Pixar venture, as he took over Apple again in 1997 and made it one of the most valuable companies in the world. Apple had less than 4% of the personal computer market at the time. And the market did not believe Apple could accomplish much more than carve out a little niche for themselves (while Windows/Intel had the lion's share). When this news became a public knowledge, many people showed their concern for the business. Even a business professor Richard Rumelt spoke to him in 1998. Job's answer was quite simple when the professor asked him for his strategy. 'I am going to wait for the next big thing.' So, one of the most prominent businessmen of this era decided to make the wise choice of doing nothing. Just like he said, he just waited for the next big opportunity to present itself and this did not take so long after all.
The PC market was quickly evolving in the late 1990's. Jobs was well aware that there would be significant technical advancements upon which he could profit. He had done so with the Apple II, Macintosh, and Pixar. Jobs launched the iPod, which transformed the music business just two years after deciding to 'wait for the next big thing'. He then did the same thing with the iPhone and iPad. Apple's market capitalization peaked at $350 billion under his leadership. Apple became the first publicly listed business with a $1 trillion value due to Jobs' waiting approach. Presently, Apple is approaching about 2 trillion dollars in market capitalization.
If he had been alive today, his net worth would have been an estimated 45 billion. He would have made 402 million per year from dividend payments. Let's suppose for a moment that Steve never sold any of his initial 20% share in Apple. For the sake of argument, let us also assumethat he never left the business to manage Pixar and sell it for billions of dollars. He would be worth well over $400 billion now if he kept his 20% share as the business which expanded to a $2 trillion market value. As a result, he would be the wealthiest person in contemporary history by a factor of two.
