Stocks are either bought or sold in the stock exchanges. In this article, titled 'Sell Volume vs Buy Volume Stocks', we will take a look at both in detail. The term 'volume' in selling or buying of stocks represents a number of units of the shares which will transact or change hands, or will be specified in futures contracts for a pre-defined period.
Traders consider the volume to be a metric for understanding the liquidity level of a stock. Hence, they can make decisions how to enter or exit a position. In other words, the volume is a moving target.
There is a standard term called 'volume analysis'. This is a technique that is used in determining which trade to make. It is done by finding the relationship between the price of the stock and its volume.
If the trading volume of a stock is high, it makes it easier for traders to buy or sell any quantity, either large or small, as there are ample buyers and sellers in the market for that particular stock.
If the price is higher, the buyers enjoy control of the stock. The buy volume takes place at the offer price. This is the price at which the sellers will part with the shares. If a trader buys shares at the current offer price, it means the stock is desired and is included in the metric of the buying volume.
When the price is low, the stock is said to be controlled by the sellers. The sell volume takes place at the bid price. If a seller is willing to sell at the bid price, it means he/she has less desire for the stock.
The volume can be seen at the bottom of a price chart, which is depicted as vertical bars. With these, one can understand the number of shares that have been transacted (or changed hands) over a certain period of time.
Most traders prefer day trading with volume as they can quickly take entries and exits with either large positions or small. Day traders tend to go with high average volume. Low average volume attracts the least number of traders.
It is suggested to look for higher-than-usual volume days, as volatility exists, and one can find large price movements in either positive or negative directions. If most of the volume occurs at the bid price, a lower price movement can be seen. It is just the opposite if a good number of volume takes place at the ask price. Increased volume means there has been important news, and active traders have felt concerned about the sudden influence on volume trading.
Monitoring the volume can help in the analyzing of stock price movement. A rise in the volume will reveal the convictions of traders in either price movement direction. If the stock is moving up and an increase in volume is noticed along with the rise in price, it means the buyer is eager to buy. However, this occurs with larger moves in the positive return direction.
It is important to note that the volume would be large if the movement of the price is in the trending direction. It would be small if the movement is against the trends.
If the trend is above normal, an extreme volume spike is seen. As for the period when the end of a trend is indicated, this is termed an 'exhaustion move'. During this phenomenon, ample shares are transacted and no one exits, pushing the price further in the trending direction. However, this can reverse quickly.
Both selling volume and buying volume work like indicators for traders to understand the liquidity of a stock in the marketplace. They help traders make decisions as to whether they should enter or exit a position accordingly.
In this article, titled 'Sell Volume vs Buy Volume Stocks', we tried to explain the two terms in detail, and also show how traders react to these phenomenon.
