Samsung and Apple are both considered to be rivals in the manufacturing of smartphones. However, Samsung's core business is not just limited to its smartphone division. It is involved in the manufacture of tons of electronics such as its gaming console, PlayStation, Television, Mobile Phones, Watches, Memory chips, Air Conditioners, and so on. On the other side, Apple is known for its iPhones (smartphone), iMAC (Computer), Apple Watch, and similar items.
If we look at the data from the last 12 months, it feels that the Apple stock appreciated and nearly doubled its price. It was mainly due to its services department, Airpods, iPhones, and Apple Watches. On the other hand, if we look at Korea's based tech giant Samsung, its share price appreciated by 25%. One of the major reasons for this drag on growth was the semiconductor chips shortage which had a negative effect on Samsung. However, during the same period, Samsung's sales of electronic devices, as well as smartphones, managed to offset some of the damage.
Let's look at each of these technology giants and figure out how they operate and make money...
Over the years, Apple has reduced its reliance on the revenue generated from iPhones. Today, only 55% of the total revenue of Apple is from iPhone sales. Instead, a new rising source of revenue for Apple is through various services such as Apple Arcade, App Store, Apple TV, Apple Pay, and others. From these services, Apple managed to earn 18% of its total revenue.
The rest was from the sales of Apple Watches, wearable devices, iPads, and other electronic devices.
If we look at Samsung, it feels like it has a hand in pretty much every business. The bulk of Samsung comes from the IM (IT & Mobile) sector. Experts believe that the revenue from the IM sector was around 47%.
Samsung is also involved in the manufacturing of semiconductor chips and display panels for mobile, TV, and other devices. The name of this unit is called 'Device Solutions,' or DS. This was the 2nd biggest earner for Samsung and contributed around 41% of the total revenue of the company.
The rest of the revenue is distributed in various other businesses such as TVs, Air Conditioners, and various electronic and home appliances.
If we look at the revenue growth from the financial year 2015 to 2021, Apple maintained a 12% growth per year. However, during the same period of time, Samsung's revenue growth was only 6% which is almost half of Apple's growth numbers.
Apple no longer holds dominance in the smartphone market, and as such, its main product Apple is struggling to compete in a tough market. Rising competition from Samsung and especially Chinese mobile phone manufacturers have caused significant problems for Apple.
That's why Apple moved into other electronic products and services to keep the growth and revenue coming. If we look at today's numbers, it becomes apparent that Apple's move into the services segment proved to be a wise decision as the revenue from this source is growing much faster than the rest of the company.
Right now, the iPhone is the best smartphone for Apple in terms of sales during the holiday season. The positive effect of iPhone sales will definitely show up in the results of FY 2021. A 5G supported iPhone is going to be a big hit for Apple's main selling product, iPhone. However, the results of 5G iPhone sales will only show up in the FY 2022 report.
I believe that Apple's sales and revenue from its products and services other than iPhone will continue to increase and further diversify Apple's income streams. Some of the major products that had a positive effect on the company's top line were Apple Watches, Airpods, and the services segment.
If we look at the predictions of analysts, they believe that Apple could experience revenue growth of 10% this year. However, for the next year, the revenue growth may slow down to around 8%.
If we move away from the USA to South Korea, the tech giant Samsung has problems of its own too! For once, its smartphone business is facing tough competition from the Chinese manufacturers and the US-based Apple. Another major problem faced by Samsung is the falling prices of memory chips which also happens to be one of the core businesses of the company. The Samsung TV is also an important product, but its sales have also slowed down recently... The reason? It could be cheaper alternatives from the Chinese and other manufacturers.
On the surface, it might appear that Samsung sold more smartphones in 2021, but if we dig deeper, it becomes clear that the margins from mobile phone sales actually dropped. In simple terms, Samsung is selling more mobile phones but not making as much money as it used to be in the past.
Overall, Samsung seems to be the better choice but not every traded or investor can manage to trade in the Samsung stock. So if you do not have access to the overseas share market, then you will have to stick with Apple Inc.
