We found 11 online brokers that are appropriate for Trading S&P 500 Spread Betting Investment Platforms.
The S&P 500 is one of the most followed indices worldwide, tracking the top 500 corporations in America. There are a variety of methods that investors can speculate on the volatility of this index. One method is through spread betting, where no commissions fee, broker fee, and tax feed will be incurred. In this article, we will discuss S&P 500 spread betting in detail.
Spread betting involves speculating on the market volatility of a particular market index. You speculate on the future direction of the index and the difference in price. S&P 500 spread betting starts with the broker providing a price spread. This is the broker’s guess of where the price of the index will be in the close future.
Let us take for example that the spread is 3930-3935. The next step is to choose the direction of your trade. Do you speculate that the price of the market will be above or below that price spread? If you assume the price will be above the price spread, you will execute a buy order. If you speculate that the price of the index will be below the broker’s price spread, then you will execute a sell order.
A buy order will be executed at the highest end of the broker’s price spread. Based on the above numbers, a buy order will be executed at $3935. Conversely, a sell order will be executed at the lowest end of the broker’s low-price spread. From the above example, the sell order will be executed at $3930.
It is important to note that spread betting involves the differences in settlement prices and the opening process. This difference is measured in base points. For the S&P 500, a base point is $0.1. This means that you will be making speculations about each price difference of $0.1 of the S&P 500. The next step of this speculation is to set your stake per base point. This refers to how much money you will speculate for each base point of difference. Let us assume that you speculate £2 per stake.
Given that we started with the spread of 3930-3935 and put a buy order, let us take for example that the market went through a bull wave and the price grew. Therefore, the new price is higher than the last quote. The broker will then update its quotes and present a new spread.
Assuming that the new spread is 3940-3945, you will close the position. The position will be closed at the lowest value of the new spread, thus at the value of 3940. Your price difference will be:3 940-3935 = 5 points. We need to remember that each point has 10 base points. So, our profit will be: [£2/ base point * 5 points * (10 base point\ point)] = £100.
We can see that this method of speculation gives instant leverage of 10 times your capital as it multiplies each dollar of difference in the price index by 10 base points. This means that there is room to make great profits. If this tool is used correctly, you will be able to quickly grow your wealth.
Furthermore, you can use spread betting to capitalize on bear markets. If speculated right, you can accumulate wealth via entering short trades. In addition, the good thing about shorting via spread betting is that it does not involve the borrowing of securities.
However, spread betting can also incur a large risk. If not managed right, the speculator can lose more than the money they put in. If you do not speculate the right direction of the market, sudden volatility will incur huge capital losses. Also, if you have a position with spread betting and you do not close it within the day, the position will roll over the next day. This will incur financing fees that are related to holding overnight positions.
Since such a speculation method is highly risky, it is better to have sufficient practice and understand the market well before engaging with such financial derivatives. A lot of brokers will offer test accounts where you can practice trade S&P 500 spread betting. This will help you learn the commands and to manage the interface.
Speculating with spread betting is risky but profitable. Traders interested in spread betting need to know the market and to be knowledgeable about the trading platform before engaging in it. Furthermore, there are a lot of brokers in the UK that allow one to engage in spread betting. Therefore, choose the one that allows you to open a test account and that has the best platform for your needs.
