We found 11 online brokers that are appropriate for Trading UK Investment Apps.
GameStop shares have been sky-rocketing in popularity since January. Small traders driven by Reddits WallStreetBets showed strong attempts in trying to destroy the hedge funds. Prominent hedge funds are subject to huge potential losses valued at billions of dollars. Therefore, small investors teamed up to buy GameStop stocks and other short shares to hit the hedge funds hard.
In response to the trending saga, Robinhood tried to ban stock purchases in several companies, especially GameStop. The list includes companies that have been 'promoted' by WallStreetBets on Reddit. As you might have known, the Robinhood trading app is extremely popular on the social platform.
GameStop stocks have experienced rallies that range from 60% to 135% increases per day. Even though Robinhood lifted the buying restriction on the GameStop shares, many traders still express their disapproval. The company has claimed that the restrictions aren't aimed to stop retail investors from buying related stocks, but to cover the deposit requirements with the clearinghouse.
In fact, not many people know about the Depository Trust and Clearing Company which is actually the only clearinghouse that covers all stock trades in the US markets. The institution has the main function in safekeeping to enable instant stock buying and selling by performing the exchange for cash. Trades are executable even though it takes more than one day.
Following the compliance with SEC regulation, all regulated brokerage services would have to deposit money with the clearinghouse to cover the ongoing trades until they have been settled by the users of the brokerage platform. In normal conditions, the clearinghouse deposit can be used to cover the settlement when users trade on the same stocks.
However, GameStop's massive buying is an anomaly at Robinhood and on any other brokerage platforms. This is because the selling rate on these bought stocks is incredibly low. For an overview, GameStop shares were owned by half of total Robinhood users at that moment. This condition has driven the many clearinghouse deposit requirements that need to be met by Robinhood.
The clearinghouse backed up the company's argument by showing the increasing collateral requirements following the WallStreetBets vs Wall Street drama. At this point, Robinhood's cash requirements reached the limit that the company can bear at that particular time. The fundraising valued at $1 billion and $300 million of credit hardly covered the collateral requirements at the clearinghouse, which explained why Robinhood desperately limited the buying of these stocks.
Therefore, it is understandable that Robinhood expanded its restrictions to 49 other stocks, including popular stocks like Starbucks, General Motors, and BeyondMeat. Even trending vaccine stocks, NovaVax and Moderna, have also been included in the purchase limits. However, Robinhood did not want to admit the expanded restrictions on those stocks, instead claiming they just wanted to sustain the monitoring to make appropriate adjustments.
The criticism has also broadened the extended restrictions after the GameStop drama. The radical response of Robinhood drives some questions about Robinhood's financial position. The company claimed that the buying restrictions on those stocks will be temporary until they can pay for the traded securities. Robinhood has stated that its focus was to meet its requirements in response to the volatile market.
To be fair, it's not only Robinhood that issued restrictions, as other brokerage companies also did the same thing. The heavily shorted stocks are the main targets of this buying restriction. Regardless of the criticism, we can see that its restriction and extension were taken with strong business calculation. Instead of executing their global expansion, Robinhood has decided to open another office somewhere in Manhattan. With 13 million users, the company is confident to expand its business domestically. Despite the Covid-19 pandemic, millions of users signed up for Robinhood. Therefore, despite the controversy faced, Robinhood is still doing relatively well with its popularity still on the rise.
