Despite setbacks caused by the pandemic, Poland has managed to spur growth into its economy. Some of the factors which are contributing positively towards the growth are strong private consumption, new investments, and improved trade in the euro area countries. According to the World Bank, these positive events may reverse some of the economic setbacks caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.
World Bank forecast for Poland's GDP growth is 3.3% in 2021. The current growth (3.5%) is actually a downward revision of the previous 3.5% growth target. The more deadly third wave of coronavirus has once again put the brakes on the country's economy. Other neighboring countries of Europe are also struggling with new flare-ups of the virus. All these factors will negatively affect the GDP growth but growth is still expected, nonetheless.
Looking ahead, Poland's GDP growth is projected to slow slightly to 3.8% in 2025 as global economic uncertainties and inflationary pressures persist. However, continued investments in green energy and infrastructure are expected to support long-term growth. By 2026, growth is forecast to stabilize at around 4.0%, driven by a robust domestic market and an increase in export activities to key European partners, particularly in the technology and manufacturing sectors.
According to World's bank country representative 'Marcus Heinz', it was the first time in 30 years that the Polish economy saw a decline. Generally, Poland is considered a well-diversified economy which positive growth in various sectors. But the COVID-19 pandemic has just changed the entire economic landscape - causing a decline in the GDP of a country like Poland.
Now, strong fiscal stimulus is required to help the most affected sectors get off the ground. Otherwise, the country may have to face the challenge of rising public debt.
Europe is moving towards green energy projects with a low carbon footprint. To help its member countries move towards that future, the EU is planning on giving funds to all the member countries. As things stand right now, Poland's institutions do not have the capacity to handle the funds. If Poland wants a boom in infrastructure spending & new energy projects, it needs to prepare its institutions for the upcoming EU finds. Green energy-related EU funds will further propel the GDP growth.
Experts believe that developing economies in Europe, including Poland, are poised to continue their growth trajectory in 2025. While specific GDP growth projections for Poland in 2025 are not yet available, it's anticipated that the country will benefit from sustained global economic recovery, increased trade, and continued investments. Factors such as ongoing geopolitical developments, potential economic shocks, and global inflation trends will influence the overall economic landscape and impact Poland's growth rate.
Besides the human cost of the pandemic, it also dealt a deadly blow to economies around the world.
Poverty around the world also increased due to rising unemployment. Looking ahead, strong growth in the region may be seen but overall recovery in GDP is expected to remain depressed and even below the levels seen before the pandemic.
One thing the current pandemic taught us was the need for good governance. In order to keep the economy running while also managing the health-related side of the pandemic, is a skill that was not shown by most governments.
Looking forward, only those countries will prosper which can balance the health and economic side of the pandemic. Most of the measures which were needed to contain the virus only required good governance - measures such as social distancing, stimulus, rapid vaccination, and helping out households as well as businesses.
The education sector also took a severe blow, mainly due to coronavirus. This is also the sector that no one is talking about at all. Governments around the world need to find a suitable way for educating millions of children virtually.
In most of the central Asian and European countries, the government provides jobs to around 24% of the educated workforce. As for the investments in the economy, the government also represents around 40% share.
In coming years, experts believe that government involvement will only increase, instead of a decline. Some of the sectors will see more government involvement in healthcare, education, care of the elderly & management of the COVID-19 virus.
Poland which was once regarded as one of the stable economies of Europe is facing new challenges... Among these challenges, handling the pandemic is the most important one. If the Polish government can successfully manage the pandemic by using restrictions and vaccines, the country will get a head start.
If the situation worsens, tough travel restrictions on Poland may be imposed. By looking at the data provided by Google, a sharp decline in new COVID-19 cases can be seen. The latest data shows around 6,700 new cases per day(7-day average). This is a significant drop from 28,000 new cases (average). Continuation of the same policy may improve the pandemic situation.
For the year 2024, Poland's GDP growth forecast was 4.2%.
The above forecasts are made by the World Bank and not the central bank of Poland.
