On 28 May 1991, an electronics show was being held in Chicago, USA. During the show, a popular company Sony announced that it is working with another company called Nintendo to create a new gaming console. The idea was to create a super NES console with an added feature: A built-in CD drive.
Since both these companies were from Japan, it felt natural for them to work towards a secret project that would be called Nintendo PlayStation. When Sony announced the project, there were already rumors about it. When the announcement was made, it easily became the highlight of the Consumer Electronics Show.
But what was being shown to the public was far from reality. Behind the scenes, things were not looking good at Nintendo's end. For starters, Nintendo was worried about the intentions of Sony and believed that it wanted to make its way into the games business.
In reality, Nintendo was justified in its paranoia. In fact, the Sony engineer who was behind this project saw this joint project as the first step towards the start of the game consoles business for Sony.
Soon things blew out of proportion, and Nintendo announced that it would no longer work with Sony on this project. Instead, they decided to go with another tech company known by the name of Philips (A Dutch company). To make things worse, this decision by Nintendo was announced just after Sony's announcement after the game console with a built-in CD drive.
But did it stop Sony from making its way into the game console business? In reality, the clever move by Nintendo actually backfired.
Norio Ohga, president of Sony at that time, was beyond furious with the decision of Nintendo, so he decided to take revenge on Nintendo by introducing a whole new division in Sony named 'Sony Computer Entertainment.' A direct result of this move was seen in the form of PlayStation - a unique gaming console owned by Sony. At that time, the gaming console offered something which was the original dream of Sony and Nintendo at that time: a console that offers 3D graphics with an option of CD storage.
At that time, it felt the obvious thing to combine both the 3D graphics and CD drive in a single console, but when Sony went out to the game makers to start making games for its 3D system, the response was not entirely good. For starters, the 3D technology was still in its early stages. The famous 3D game known as Doom was only released by the end of the year. Even that game was not fully 3D - the game world was created using 2D images and was then turned into 3D by software.
During such times, the personal computers (PCs) were also without any 3D graphic cards, including the arcade game machines. It is clear that the new visual approach in the form of 3D graphics was still a new concept.
The general opinion was that the Playstation, which includes high-end 3D hardware, would become so expensive that no one would buy it. The impression of high price was further fueled when Panasonic also launched its own game console. The Panasonic console was built on new 3DO hardware. According to him, it was important to challenge the monopoly and power of the game console manufacturers such as Nintendo and Sega.
The EA founder believed that the use of cartridge systems in the console was something that would hinder the growth of the gaming industry as a whole. Even the PC's at that time could not be called a replacement for the gaming consoles.
In short, he wanted to make a device that resembled a VHS but for video games. This way, game developers would have access to hardware on which they could make games with no restrictions. That is what the idea behind the 3DO company was.
By using this technology, Panasonic was among the first movers who adopted Hawkin's system in its console. But soon after, the high hopes were shattered at the price of the console was close to $700, which was really expensive and was due to the use of advanced technology.
The fact that the 3DO was not going to become popular and even a success started to appear in small stages. The first straw was poor holiday sales in the year 1993. Next year, more and more game developers started going to the competition, which was offering a higher fee ($10) with many restrictions on the license. On the other hand, the cost was $3 per game in the 3DO.
Today, both Nintendo and Sony are major players in the game console and gaming industry with their own respective consoles.
