Trainers or sneakers is a term given to the shoes which are specially designed for sports. However, these types of shoes have moved towards the casual audience and are now used as casual footwear in today's age. If we look at the overall industry's sales, the total worth of the market was estimated at around $58 billion in the year 2018. Experts believe that this market will continue to grow and even become worth $88 billion (US dollar) in the next few years.
Such a huge market evaluation has given birth to some of the famous shoe brands such as Nike and Adidas. Many new entrants have also entered the footwear market and especially the sneakers niche.
If we look at the history of sports shoes, the two big giants Nike and Adidas, have been trying to outdo each other and claim the #1 spot for many years.
To better understand who's the top dog and the underdog of the sportswear shoes, we need to dig deeper into the sales numbers...
Let's start with Nike and look at the revenue of this market leader. Based on 2021 data, the revenue of Nike's footwear was more than $44.538 billion (US Dollars). On the other hand, Adidas was actually lagging behind with total revenue of only $15 billion (US Dollars).
The revenue numbers listed above include all the sales from other subsidiaries and brands owned by Adidas and Nike, such as Reebok and Converse. So if we look at the difference in terms of revenue, Nike is ahead by $29.538 billion (US Dollars).
However, if we look at the revenue growth of each company, things look a little different. Nike is leading in terms of numbers, but its revenue growth is only around 6.8%. On the other hand, Adidas is growing at a much higher rate and is evident by its revenue growth of 17.6%. This shows that Adidas is growing faster than the footwear leader Nike.
So in terms of revenue, the winner is Nike by a clear difference. However, Adidas's growth is way ahead of its competitor.
An important metric that can be used to check the size of a publicly listed company is to look at market capitalization.
If we look at the market capitalization of Nike, it was around $273.33 Billion (US Dollars) in 2021. As for Adidas's market capitalization, it was around $75 billion (US Dollars). From these numbers, it becomes clear that Nike is ahead by $75 billion in terms of market capitalization.
If we look at the recent performance of both stocks, the growth & overall performance of Adidas is much better as compared to Nike. However, the stock growth of Nike is the same as the industry's standard growth.
As for the share price, 1 share of Adidas is priced at 308 EUR, while a single share of Nike is priced at $173.24.
Nike is following a more serious approach and clearly markets its shoes to be used in high-performance sports. On the other hand, Adidas is trying to market its sportswear shoes to be used in casual settings as well as sports. Furthermore, to enable the common usage of sportswear shoes, Adidas also partners with famous celebrities from time to time, such as Kayne West.
The current marketing strategy of Adidas is superior to Nike's approach. This approach's results can already be seen as Adidas's growth is much higher than its rival in most of the metrics.
One man who turned the focus back towards Adidas was a signer named Kayne West. Originally, he launched a trainer brand called Yeezy trainers and partnered with Nike to market and sell it. Over the span of 5 years of partnership, a total of 3 unique styles were released. However, the singer decided to end the partnership in 2014 and moved towards Nike's rival 'Adidas.'
And so started another breed of trainers known as 'Adidas Yeezys.' Based on this year's numbers, the total sales of the Yeezys trainers are executed to be around $1.5 billion (US Dollars), which is a big win for Adidas as well as the rapper-singer.
However, Yeezys is still not the #1 trainer in the world. In terms of sales, Micheal Jordan's collaboration with Nike has resulted in total sales of around $3 billion (US Dollars) per annum. The name of these trainers is Air Jordan, and they are currently termed as the #1 trainers in the world.
Nike also continues to find new opportunities for sponsorship and collaboration with famous sports stars. This was seen recently when Nike signed deals with a famous football club. As a result, the players started to wear the Air Jordan brand of shoes. This was clearly a marketing ploy which brought advertisement and a lot of cool factor for Nike.
Currently, the Nike brand holds the #1 spot, but Adidas's growth might mean trouble for Nike in the coming years.
