2020 was not a favourable year for investors. The market was volatile, and the associated risk was extremely high due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Interest rates returns were next-to-nothing on CDs, bonds and other safe fixed-income investments. Hence, it is important to invest in such a financial product that can outpace inflation concerning returns.
Low-risk ETF is the call of the time. It gives instant diversification. Such diversification is not possible by handpicking the stocks.
In this article titled Low-Risk ETF, we will have an in-depth look at some of the popular ETFs which are less risky to invest in.
The tricker of Vanguard Real Estate ETF is VNQ, and it is popular among low-risk attitude investors. It offers an opportunity to invest in the entire real estate market of the United States without the need to buy physical property. The fund invests in the equity real estate investment trusts or REITs.
It is good to note that the REITs own and operate commercial real estate that generates income. Hence, investing in it is a savvy move, and these legally distribute over 90 per cent of the taxable income to investors in the form of dividends.
The ETF has an AUM of $61.4 billion, and this is the largest in the U.S. in the real estate segment. Its expense ratio is slightly cheaper to 0.12 per cent. It means 12 cents in an investment of $1,000. Its dividend was 3.31 per cent by January 31.
The tricker of Vanguard High Dividend Yield ETF is VYM, and it is widely famed for offering higher dividends in the United States. The ETF tracks more than 400 companies, and REITs are not included in it. The list is based on dividend forecast, and some of the companies included are Johnson & Johnson, JP Morgan Chase, Procter and Gamble, Bank of America and Intel.
Note that this ETF does not screen the stocks based on risk as the companies that pay dividends consistently are almost stable. As of February 28, its dividend yield was 3.05 per cent. Its one-year return was 19.68 per cent, and the expense ratio was 0.06 per cent.
Tickered as VIG, the Vanguard Dividend Appreciation ETF lists such companies which pay dividends as well as a track record of increasing the payments. It has 212 stocks and tracks Nasdaq U.S. Dividend Achievers Select Index. Some of its largest holdings include Microsoft, Walmart, Johnson & Johnson, Procter and Gamble and UnitedHealth Group. Retirees prefer such stocks which have a history of increasing the payments as they look for defeating inflation.
Its expense ratio is just 0.06 per cent, which is extremely low.
The tricker for Vanguard Value ETF is VTV. It is best for such investors who are looking for low-risk investment along with good income-generating potentiality. It tracks CRSP U.S. Large-Cap Value Index.
The companies listed in this ETF include Johnson & Johnson, Berkshire Hathaway, JP Morgan Chase, Procter and Gamble and UnitedHealth Group.
As of February 28, its one-year returns were 21.34 per cent. Its dividend was 2.44 per cent. Its expense ratio is 0.4 per cent, which is one of the lowest in the ETF industry in the U.S.
However, it is important to note that the ETF does not offer some tremendous growth potentiality, but the holdings are, of course, of low fee and highly stable.
