We found 11 online brokers that are appropriate for Trading Forex Investment Platforms.
Lot is a generic term that means, a fixed volume. It is one of the most commonly used words in Forex trading, and refers to the number of currency units that one buys or sells.
In other words, a 'lot' in Forex means, 'a unit that measures a transaction amount'. When an order is placed, it is placed in sizes, and this is quoted in lots.
It can be said that a lot is like an egg box, or egg carton, in which there are twelve eggs. A customer buys an egg carton instead of a specified number of eggs.
This concept is similar to the term 'lot' in Forex. There are four sizes: standard, mini, micro, and nano. Standard is for 100,000 units; mini for 10,000; micro for 1,000; and nano for 100 units of currency.
Some brokers deal in lots while others in actual units. It is better to trade currencies in large amounts though, as the change in value that is measured in each trade is very small.
We can understand this better with an example. Suppose a trader uses a standard lot in Forex, and the calculation is as below:
If the exchange rate of USD/JPY is 119.80, one pip change is .01/119.80 x 100,000 = $8.34 per pip.
If the exchange rate of USD/CHF is 1.4555, one pip change is .0001/1.4555 x 100,000 = $6.87 per pip.
The formula can be slightly different if the USD is not quoted first. Let's have a look at that next.
If the exchange rate of EUR/USD is 1.1930, one pip change is .0001/1.1930 x 100,000 = 8.38 x 1.1930 = $9.99734. This would be rounded up to $10 per pip.
If the exchange rate of GBP/USD is 1.18040, one pip change is .0001/1.8040 x 100,000 = 5.54 x 1.8040 = $9.99416. This also would be rounded up to $10 per pip.
However, the calculation of pip values may differ across brokers. The convention differs and is related to lot size.
It should be noted that, with the movement of the market, the pip value changes based on the currency being traded.
Leverage is one of the best features in Forex trading. It helps investors to trade large volumes with little capital. It is perfect for small investors.
Using the leverage feature means that only a small amount of capital is required to trade several times more value, like 10x or 20x. The deposit is called 'margin', and the remainder is borrowed from the broker.
If the leverage is 100:1, the trader needs to invest 1 percent of the entire trade. If the trade value is $100,000, the margin is $1,000. It should be stressed here that leverage magnifies profits, and similarly, losses are magnified as well. The leverage ratio can also vary from broker to broker.
By now, it is clear how to calculate leverage and pip value. Let us take a look at how to calculate profit and loss, considering USD buying and Swiss Franc selling.
The quoted rate is 1.4525/1.4530 and 1 standard lot in Forex is bought. If the price moves up to 1.4550, the investor closes the position.
Following this, the new quoted rate is 1.4550/1.4555, and the bid price is 1.4550. The difference between the two positions is .0020 or 20 pips.
When a trader enters or exits a trade, there would be spread in the quote of bid/ask. When one buys a currency, they use the ask or offer price. Alternately, if one sells a currency, they would use the bid price.
Lot in Forex refers to the size, and it is basically categorized into four sizes. These are: standard, mini, micro, and nano. The units are: 100,000; 10,000; 1,000; and 100, respectively.
It is similar to an egg carton. People usually buy a carton of eggs instead of just a small number of eggs. In the same way, investors buy lots in Forex instead of a number of units.
In this article, we discussed such lots, and that the offered size differs from broker to broker. We also talked about leverage and margin, which are true blessings to small investors.
However, beginners are suggested to avoid using high leverage. This leads to greater risk, and one may suffer more loss than the initial deposited money, even though there is a chance of getting magnified profits. It is also advised to have proper knowledge about Forex, and ample experience with a demo account, before trading in this manner with real money.
