Limit if Touched Guide

Limit if Touched

What is a 'Limit if Touched' order? Many might not know. A Limit if Touched order is an order to either buy or to sell an instrument at a pre-defined price or better than the specified one, and can either be above or below the market.

The Limit if Touched is held in the system and the order is triggered when the price is touched. The order is also abbreviated as LIT order.

The Limit if Touched order is just like a stop limit; the only difference is that the LIT is placed above the market price, while a stop limit sell price is placed below.

The best advantage of Limit if Touched orders is that an order is never executed at a less favourable price than the limit price.

Limit if Touched Order Type - Buy

Step 1

Suppose the market price of an asset is $16.45 and a trader wishes to buy 100 shares of it, yet they are not willing to pay a price of more than $16.35. They also do not wish to enter the market above $16.40.

They will now create a buy order choosing Limit if Touched, entering a price of $16.35. In the Trigger Price field, they enter the price of $16.40.

Step 2

The trader has transmitted that the order that will not be triggered until the price of $16.40 is touched. The execution will occur at $16.35 or above.

Step 3

If the asset's price starts falling and touches $16.40, a limit order will then buy 100 shares.

Step 4

If the price falls further and touches the $16.35 price limit, the system fills the order of 100 shares at $16.35 per share.

Limit if Touched Order Type – Sell

Step 1

A trader has 100 shares of an asset and the average price of each is $64.94, while the current price is $68.39. They wish to sell, but at a profit and not less than 350.00.

The trader thus places a sell order with LIT. They enter a price limit of $68.84 and $68.42 for the trigger part. The system generates orders when the price reaches $68.42.

Step 2

The trader has now transmitted the limitm and if the price touches $68.42, the order is executed.

Step 3

If the price rises and hits the 68.42 marks, a limit order of 100 shares is submitted at $68.44.

Step 4

If the price movement continues further and reaches to $68.55, the order is executed for 100 shares at $68.44 each. Thus they make a profit of $350.

Limit if Touched Titbits

In other words, investors has access to the facility of thresholding a price either above the current market rate or below it. When the price reaches that pointed level, an order is triggered. Assets are bought or sold only when the market matches with that limit. Hence, the price is controlled entirely by an investor. This is different from market-if-touched, or MIT, orders.

What is Market-if-Touched Order

This is different from a Limit if Touched order. It is placed with brokers by specifying that the asset is to be sold at the current market rate, but only if and when the price reaches a pre-defined limit.

This feature is used by investors to instruct brokers to buy a specific stock when a drop in price is seen below a certain level.

Investors can even define a limit at which an order is triggered. When the order is triggered, assets will need to be bought, even if its price rises above the threshold. The same is effective in the selling of the asset.

Limit if Touched Verdict

Limit if Touched is one of the best features for investors to exercise as they are able to enjoy complete control on the price of their assets.

It is a similar process to the stop limit tool, but prices here are placed above market price. With stop limit orders, prices are placed below market price.

Above all, with LIT there is no reason to execute an order without a favourable price.

In this article, titled 'Limit if Touched', we have explained the feature using a Buy example as well as Sell definitions in segregated steps.

Moreover, the LIT is different from the market-if-touched order, and we have highlighted this towards the end of the article. The two terms are completely different and both offer their own pros and cons. Which one to use depends on the preferred trading strategy that an investor possesses.
