According to the 2019 Forbes billionaires' list, Amazon founder Jeff Bezos is the wealthiest person on the planet. He is the most affluent man in modern history with an estimated net worth of $177 billion (£99 billion).Jeff Bezos is the founder of the worlds largest retailer, Amazon, and Blue Origin. He is not, however, the wealthiest person in history. Mansa Musa, a 14th-century West African ruler whose lavish handouts ruined an entire country's economy, is thought to have held that title. Mansa Musa was a born ruler. Mansa Abu Bakr, his brother, ruled the empire until 1312, when he surrendered it to embark on an expedition. According to Shibab al-Umari, a world class historian, his brother, Abu-Bakr was obsessed with the Atlantic Ocean and every part of the unknown it represented.
He set sail with a fleet of 2,000 ships and tens of thousands of men, women, and slaves, never to be seen again. Some, such as the Ivan Van Sertima, the great American historian, believe they made it to South America. However, there is no proof of this. Mansa Musa, on the other hand, inherited the kingdom he left behind. Mali's kingdom grew significantly during his reign. Timbuktu was one of the 24 cities he annexed. From the Atlantic Ocean to modern-day Niger, the kingdom spanned about 2,000 miles, encompassing Senegal, Mauritania, Mali, Burkina Faso, Niger, The Gambia Guinea-Bissau, Guinea, and the Ivory Coast. Great resources, like gold and salt, come with such a vast geographical mass. According to the British Museum, Mali's kingdom accounted for almost half of the gold in the Old World during Mansa Musa's rule.
And the king owned everything. Mali's empire was famous for its gold, but the country itself was not so popular on other terms. When Mansa Musa, a devoted Muslim, made the decision to travel to Mecca, everything changed. The journey included stops in the Sahara Desert and Egypt. According to reports, the monarch led a caravan of 60,000 soldiers out of Mali. He brought his whole royal court and the officials, as well as troops, griots (entertainers), merchants, camel drivers, and 12,000 slaves, in addition to a lengthy train of goats and lambs for sustenance. It was a metropolis on the move across the desert- a city where everyone, from the king to the slaves, was dressed in gold brocade and the finest Persian silk. There were a hundred camels in tow, each carrying hundreds of pounds of gold. It was quite a sight to see.
The scene became even more luxurious when the caravan arrived in Cairo, where they could flaunt their riches. Mansa Musa impacted Cairo that al-Umari, who visited the city 12 years after the Malian monarch, remarked how highly the Egyptians regarded him. He liberally distributed gold in Cairo, and his three-month stay caused the price of gold in the area to fall for ten years, wreaking havoc on the economy. According to the US-based technology firm SmartAsset.com, Mansa Musa's trip cost the Middle East approximately $1.5 billion (£1.1 billion) in economic losses due to gold's devaluation. Mansa Musa went via Egypt again on his way home. Some say he attempted to assist the country's economy by withdrawing some of the gold from circulation by borrowing it back from Egyptian lenders at exorbitant interest rates. Others claim he spent so much gold that he ran out.
Mansa Musa returned from Mecca with a group of Islamic intellectuals, including direct descendants of Muhammad and Abu Es Haq es Saheli, an Andalusian poet and architect generally recognised for building the famous Djinguereber mosque. The poet was allegedly paid 200 kilograms (440lb) in gold by the monarch, equivalent to $8.2 million (£6.3 million) in today's money. He supported the arts and architecture while also funding literature and constructing schools, libraries, and mosques. People gather from far and wide to study at what would become Sankore University, established in Timbuktu. Although the tale of his kingdom is mostly unknown outside of West Africa, the wealthy monarch is generally credited for beginning the education culture in West Africa.
He was described in the Atlas as the wealthiest black man and Sultan of Mali with the most significant gold mines in the Sudan area. The Catalan Atlas also depicts the region's trade routes, highlighting Tagaza, Timbuktu, Mali, and Gabor, which drew the attention of Europe and fueled their ambition to explore and colonise the continent.
Although Mansa Musa achieved amazing things in his lifetime, it still looks as though Jeff Bezos comes out on top. Jeff Bezos has had a huge impact on consumerism and how products are moved all over the world.
Jeff Bezos has been so succesful and has accumilated so much wealth that he is now looking to spread his reach to space and other planets, which is something Mansa Musa could never have hoped to have done.
