Indonesia, a country that consists of more than 17,000 islands is facing economic problems due to pandemics. As a result, experts believe a contraction of 2% in Indonesia's economy is highly likely (2020).
COVID-19 has disrupted the global economy and plunged it into a deep recession. Its effects can be seen in major economies around the world, which are contracting instead of expanding.
During 2020, GDP growth forecast for the following are:
USA (-4.9%)
Europe (-10.2%)
Indonesia (-2%)
Japan (-6%)
The only prodigy in the whole world is China. China's economic growth in 2020 is projected at 1.2%. So while the rest of the world is going backward, China is going forward at full speed. Considering how the virus actually started to spread from China - The way china has tackled the pandemic is exceptional.
Economic Research Institute (ERIA) estimates that COVID-19 vaccines may help around one-third (33%) of the world population to return back to normalcy. However, the world is facing a pandemic and shrinking economies... It may take a little more than 3 years to just recover from the damage caused by the pandemic. Actual real growth may only come after that.
It feels strange to talk about a virus when discussing economies, but that's the world we are living in.
The world faced the last pandemic in 1918. The Spanish flu lasted for around 2 years and took 50 million lives. It's been 100+ years since that event and hardly anyone's alive from that era.
The modern world just didn't account for a pandemic of such a scale. As a result, COVID-19 has not just created a humanitarian crisis but also pushed the world economies into a deep recession.
Region of Southeast Asia motility rate is 2.43% (average) from the COVID-19. Indonesia which is part of Southeast Asia has a much higher mortality rate of 3.0%. This makes the rate of deaths from COVID-19, one of the highest in the world.
The unemployment rate is also at record levels. According to estimates, 30 million+ people from Southeast Asian countries lost their jobs. COVID-19 also pushed 18 million+ into poverty. Losing jobs means these people will face a hard time during the harsh lockdowns and slow economic growth.
So besides claiming lives and putting a burden on the healthcare system, COVID-19 also wreaked havoc on the economic front. Especially, the ASEAN countries were hit in 3 different ways:
Most countries in the region are in a recession. Most experts are eyeing a contraction in the economies of the region, including Indonesia. In 2020, the ASEAN economy may face a 2.7% contraction followed by a growth of 3-4% in 2021. However, that growth will be dependent on global growth and increased demand.
Third-quarter of 2020 was not so bad for Indonesia. Its economy only contracted by -3.5% as compared to -5.3% of 2nd quarter. However, it may not be such a positive thing due to these 3 things:
Non-performing loans are on the rise again and reached dangerous levels. These levels were not seen since the Global Financial Crisis. Based on data from September 2020, the rate of non-performing loans is 3.2%.
Foreign direct investment is not improving at all. Especially for developing countries such as Indonesia, FDI is a really bid deal. In 2017, FDI was recorded at 20 billion. Fast forward to 2020 and FDI stands at $23 billion.
Besides the investment from foreign, domestic investment is also on the decline too.
From January to September 2020, Indonesia managed a trade surplus of $13.5 billion, but that is an illusion.
Instead of rising exports, the trade surplus was achieved by a decline in imports. The decline in imports was mainly due to low demand in the domestic market. With lockdowns & restrictions, economic activity was slowed down - Resulting in a decline in imports.
During 2020, exports and imports declined by 5.8% and 18% respectively.
A fall in exports may not be such a big deal as an increase in global demand will rectify this problem. What's more troubling is the fall in imports... It means that industrial production may slow down in near future due to a shortage of raw materials & machinery.
We may see a shift away from Trump's policy of unilateralism under the Biden administration. If that happens, we may see an increase in international trade but as long as the COVID-19 crisis looms, it may not reach pre-pandemic levels.
To help businesses and people get back to normal, the stimulus must be implemented. While it may not help the export sector but it will surely drive the demand from the domestic market. However, the government must ensure that stimulus reaches the correct beneficiary - Otherwise, the recession may be prolonged resulting in slow growth ahead.
Southeast Asian countries may face a contraction of 2.7% in 2020. Only in the latter half of 2021, the economic growth may return. As a result, experts forecast 3-4% growth in 2021.
Indonesia, being a part of ASEAN countries will also likely the forecast for the rest of the region.
