We found 11 online brokers that are appropriate for Trading Index Futures Investment Platforms.
These are a type of futures contracts that mature at some time in the future. Since the name index implies, index futures are those future contracts that involve buying/selling of an index. For example, with the index future of the S&P 500, traders can speculate on the future prices of this specific index.
Since this future contract is composed of an index, it allows a trader to diversify his/her portfolio with a wide range of stocks. As a result, index futures have become a popular choice for the traders who want some diversification and even hedging against loss.
Some of the key points of these index-based futures contracts are:
In terms of features & functioning, index futures are no different than ordinary future contracts. Once the maturity date is reached, a trader has to pay up the cash that is equal to the contract. But if the trade is reversed before the maturity date, then the trader will not have to back up the contract with money.
Generally, indices contain a lot of component companies that are listed on the stock exchange. So an index future contract will also contain all the company's stocks that are part of that specific index. A popular US index is the S&P 500, which is composed of the top 500 US-based companies. When a trader or investor buys an S&P 500 index future contract, he/she is gaining exposure to around 500 top stocks of the US market.
Buying the S&P 500 index futures contract means the trader holds a bullish view of the US market.
Similarly, selling the index futures of the S&P 500 means the trader holds a bearish view of the US market.
The pricing of the S&P 500 index and the index future contract work differently. If we multiply the price of the S&P 500 by $250, we get the price of the index future contract.
For example: 3000 points x $250 = $750,000
Another index future contract which is based on the S&P 500 (E-mini), works on a different price mechanism. The price of this contract can be calculated by multiplying E-mini S&P 500 with $50.
For example: 3200 points x $50 = $160,000
As it becomes evident from these two examples, the pricing of each index future contract works differently. A future contract of a different index will have a totally different way of calculating prices.
Besides the popular S&P 500, other indices are also available in the form of future contracts. For example, two of the popular US indices, including Dow Jones and Nasdaq 100, are also available in the future markets. Smaller versions of these big indices, such as the E-mini Dow and others, can be traded as futures contracts too.
From Germany, DAX is a popular index that contains German company's shares as the main components. Then we have the Hang Seng Index (HSI), which is an index from Hong Kong. These two are also popular future index contracts available for trade.
S&P 500 represents more than 500 USA companies that are listed on the stock exchange. Buying each of them individually can be time-consuming and even cost more. A quick way to get exposure to all the companies is by buying S&P 500 futures index. Besides that, there are a lot more benefits too...
Not all is great when dealing with these complex derivatives. Let's take a look at the list of potential disadvantages of trading these type of financial instruments:
Index futures are kind of similar to the ETFs that track the performance of a specific index. However, these types of future contracts carry a high degree of risk, making them a dangerous financial product for most traders. Some of its uses, such as hedging and diversification, also require a skilled trader.
