Using IC Markets for trading in the financial market is very simple and straightforward. The brokerage platform is suitable for all levels of traders. And there are lots of tools on the ground to provide users with the best overall trading experience. The only uncertainty usually experienced by its users, although not exclusive to this platform, is how their spreads and fees are determined.
Generally, spreads and fees are difficult to understand unless you have been taught. Not knowing can make trading a bit confusing. For these reasons, we will go over the IC Markets fees and spreads and teach you how to calculate them.
Irrespective of the markets or financial assets you are trading, be they Forex, indices, bonds, or CFD, IC Markets is known to charge three kinds of costs. They are;
This fee is charged when you buy or sell any asset or instrument in the financial market. In other words, it's the cost charged on the execution of trades. These fees always take two forms, which are;
They are the fees charged for opening an account with IC Markets. Examples are inactivity fees and funding fees.
Traders may be required to pay some amounts for using tools that are available on IC Markets. Fees that fall into this category are known as Ancillary costs.
Spread is charged based on the type of account a trader has with IC Markets. This section will look into the two types of IC Markets accounts and see how to calculate spread for each one. But first you need to understand that IC Markets trades are made using the ECN (Electronic communication) style or the STP (Straight-through processing) style. These two methods save costs because they are not passed through the dealing desk.
The types of IC Markets are;
This is the recommended account for absolute beginners because it charges no commission. Trades are processed using the ECN style which attracts a fee known as the RAW spread. The raw spread is calculated by adding 1 pip to the original number of pips of the trade. This 1pip is added by subtracting 0.5pip from the bid price and adding 0.5pip to the asking price of a currency pair.
For example;
The spread cost of this trade is calculated by using the formula which says;
Total cost = (Spread) x (Pip Cost) x (Number of Lots Traded)
Let's say the investor trades 6 standard-lots. We calculate the Total cost by saying;
Total cost
= 4.0pips x $10 x 6 = $240 to open
= 4.0pips x $10 x 6 = $240 to close
Total cost = $480
Note : pip cost for a standard-lots (100,000 units) is $10, mini-lots (10,000 units) is $1, and for micro-lots (1000 units) is $0.01c, provided you are trading in your base currency.
Raw spread accounts are preferable for those looking for the smallest spreads, and it's only available to the users of the IC Markets MetaTrader 4 software and cTrader. For this account brokerage cost is in commission and not spread.
Note:
The commission for 6 standard lots is calculated to be;
For position opening = 6 x $3.50 = $21
For position closing = 6 x $3.50 = $21
Total commission = $21 + $21 = $42
Calculating spreads and commission of the brokerage fee is straightforward. Go ahead and give it a try.
