When I first started trading with IC Markets, leverage was the concept that confused me the most and honestly, it's the one thing I wish someone had explained to me with real numbers instead of just definitions. In this article, I'll walk you through exactly how IC Markets leverage works, what limits I've run into depending on my account type, and I'll show you some price examples so you can see the math for yourself rather than just taking my word for it.
The first thing I had to figure out was that my leverage isn't a fixed number it depends entirely on which IC Markets entity my account sits under:
One thing that caught me off guard is that IC Markets doesn't apply one leverage rate to my whole position it splits my trade into tiers, and each portion gets margined at a different rate as my position grows. Here's the tiered structure I trade under for FX Majors/Minors:
Price example USD/CHF, 70 lots: Say I open a 70-lot position on USD/CHF (1 lot = 100,000 units, so my total exposure is 7,000,000 USD). My margin gets calculated in three separate chunks:
Adding those up, I'd need $3,333.33 in free margin to open that full 70-lot position not the $1,400 I'd get if I (wrongly) assumed 1:5000 applied to the entire trade.
I also learned the hard way that leverage tightens during Higher Margin Requirement (HMR) windows around end-of-day rollover, major news releases, and weekends. On that same USD/CHF trade, if I'd opened it during an HMR period, my tiers would drop to 1:500 / 1:200 / 1:200, and my total margin requirement would jump to $27,500 instead of $3,333.33. That's the kind of swing that can catch you out if you're not watching the clock before a big news release.
| Instrument Class | Max Leverage | Price Example |
|---|---|---|
| Forex | Up to 1:5000 | On EUR/USD at 1:5000, if I open 1 standard lot (100,000 EUR) with the pair trading around 1.0850, my notional exposure is $108,500 but I only need about $21.70 in margin. |
| Metals | Up to 1:2000 (Gold); up to 1:1000 (Silver) | If gold is trading at $3,300/oz and I buy 1 lot (100 oz = $330,000 exposure) at 1:2000, my margin works out to $165. |
| Energies | Up to 1:500 | With WTI Crude at $68/barrel, 1 lot (1,000 barrels = $68,000 exposure) at 1:500 needs $136 in margin. |
| Cryptocurrencies | Up to 1:500 (lower on larger BTC/ETH positions) | If Bitcoin is at $60,000 and I open 1 lot (1 BTC) at 1:500, I'd need $120 in margin. |
| Indices | Up to 1:200 | With US30 trading at 43,000, one contract at 1:200 requires $215 in margin. |
| Futures | Up to 1:200 | Same 1:200 logic applies as with indices margin scales directly with contract value. |
| Bonds | Up to 1:200 | US 10-Year Treasury CFDs follow the same 1:200 ceiling. |
| Stocks / ETFs | Up to 1:20 (drops to 1:10, then 1:5 near market close) | If I buy 100 shares of a stock trading at $200 ($20,000 exposure) at 1:20, my margin is $1,000 but if I hold into the final auction window, that same position could require $4,000 as leverage steps down to 1:5. |
All prices above are illustrative I picked round numbers to make the math easy to follow, not live quotes. Always check the live price and current leverage tier in your own platform before sizing a trade.
No matter what leverage I'm trading at, IC Markets applies a 100% Margin Call level and a 50% Stop Out level. So if I have $3,333.33 tied up as margin on that USD/CHF trade above, and my equity drops to $3,333.33 (100% of used margin), I get a margin call warning. If losses keep piling up and my equity falls to $1,666.67 (50% of used margin), the platform starts auto-closing my positions, beginning with the largest losing trade, to stop my account going negative.
A disclaimer I always include for my own readers: leverage is dynamic at IC Markets and can change at any time depending on market conditions, my account jurisdiction, and position size. I always double-check my current tier in the client portal before placing a large trade, since these figures can shift without notice.
IC Markets leverage is not a loan. It is an agreement with a trader and unlike options and contracts the traded Forex products is not settled by delivery settlement. The currencies are swapped indefinitely and thereafter these are settled in cash.
If a trader enters long in spot Forex of a currency pair like GBP/USD at $1.2000, he buys GBP and sells the other currency.
Now, if GBP/USD is being traded at $1.2900 and the trader opts for entering long 100,000 units, he receives 100,000 GBP and 129,000 USD needs delivery as per the agreement.
Next, if the currency pair is traded at $1.3000 and the trader liquidates the position, the 100,000 GBP henceforth is worth 130,000 USD. He makes a profit of 1,000 USD.
The question is common. Most of the traders ask this as more leverage means more risk, yet it also means more profit. Let us say a trader has a $5000 account and wish to take a risk of 2 percent on each trade. This means the risk level is $100.
It is assumed the trader buys EUR/USD at 1.1256 and a stop loss is set at 1.1246, which is a 10 pip loss. A standard lot is entered, which means $100,000. This is 20x the size of the margin.
If the sizing of the position is correct, the risk is just 2 percent even if the trader controls a $100k position.
Let us move a step further. Say the trader wishes to risk 10 percent of the account, which is $500. A 10-pip stop trade requires $500,000 or five standard lots. With the new risk, the leverage is 100:1, which is 100x the account size. He risks just 10 percent of the overall account.
After trading with IC Markets for a while now, my honest take is this: the headline numbers, 1:5000 on forex, 1:2000 on gold look flashy in marketing material, but they're not really the number that matters day to day. What actually determines my risk is the tiered system and the HMR windows, and once I understood those, my whole approach to position sizing changed. I stopped thinking 'I have 1:5000 leverage' and started thinking 'my first 25 lots are cheap, everything after that gets progressively more expensive to hold' , which is a much more honest way to look at it.
If I'm being straight with you: I don't actually trade anywhere near max leverage, and I wouldn't recommend it either. The 1:5000 figure exists mostly for traders running very small positions who want to free up capital efficiency, not as an invitation to oversize a trade. The real value I've found in IC Markets' leverage setup is the flexibility, I can dial my own leverage down manually, the tiered system naturally discourages recklessly large single positions, and the 100%/50% margin call and stop-out levels give me a hard backstop so I can't blow through my balance into negative territory.
Where I'd genuinely caution anyone reading this: don't get caught out by HMR periods. I learned this the expensive way; a position I sized comfortably on a Thursday afternoon suddenly needed several times more margin heading into the weekend close, purely because leverage tightened without me actively doing anything. Now I check the clock before I open anything sizeable, and I'd tell any beginner to do the same.
So my bottom line: IC Markets' leverage is genuinely competitive, among the highest I've come across for a regulated broker, especially on the FSA Seychelles entity, but the number on the homepage isn't the number I actually trade with. The real skill isn't chasing the highest leverage available; it's understanding how the tiers and HMR windows apply to your specific position size and instrument, and sizing your trades so a margin call is never a surprise. If you take one thing from my experience, let it be that: leverage is a tool I use deliberately, not a ceiling I try to max out.
