Ibex 35 index is actually an abbreviation of Indice Bursatil Espanol. The meaning of this Spanish word is 'Spanish Exchange Index'. As the name implies, Ibex 35 is a benchmark index that tracks the performance of 35 Spanish companies. However, that does not mean that every Spanish company can find its way into the Ibex 35 index. In fact, only 35 highly liquid Spanish stocks were picked from the Madrid Stock Exchange and included in the Ibex 35.
Just like the USA has important indices such as the Nasdaq & S&P 500, the Ibex 35 index can be considered as an equivalent of these indices, but it is only for the Spanish stock market.
Every country has either one or more than stock exchange present in a major city. For common investors, the general public, and even the governments, it can be hard to individually track the performance of every single listed company. The only way of tracking the performance of a stock market was to look at the performance of each individual stock. But that problem was solved by introducing stock indices.
Stock indices can have various requirements and usually contain a lot of important stocks. So by simply looking at an index's performance, one can easily tell the direction and performance of the entire stock market.
In Spain, the stock market is very big, and it can be troublesome for a single individual to have an eye on every stock. So the solution to easily track the performance of the Spanish stock exchange is using Ibex 35.
The launch date of this Spanish index was in early 1992. Ever since then, the Ibex 35 has seen its own share of ups and downs. But during the period of 2000 - 2007 was particularly interesting since the Ibex 35 index performed much better than the top western stock markets. If we look at the reason for such stellar performance of the Spanish stocks, it can be attributed to strong economic growth in the domestic market.
This strong growth in the Spanish economy also translated into other sectors such as real estate, construction, and so on. So while the Western markets enjoyed its bull run during the year 1999 (dot-com bubble), this Spanish index outshined its peers after the famous dot-com bubble burst.
In 2008 the Spanish markets also took a severe hit due to the US financial crisis that swept the entire world. During the early weeks of the financial crisis, the Ibex 35 reported its biggest loss during a period of one trading day. Later on, another big hit was dealt with this Spanish index as it lost almost 7.5%.
Since the index tracks one of the most famous European stock markets, it is periodically reviewed at least two times each year. The first review comes in June, while the 2nd review comes during the month of December.
There are quite a few rules which need to be met for a company to be included in the Ibex 35 index. But the most important rule among all others is that the company must be among the top 35 Spanish companies in terms of the total trading volume. A 2nd requirement is based on market capitalization - Each participant company's market cap must be at least 0.3% of the total Spanish stock exchange market cap.
If a company that is in the process of IPO also fulfills these requirements, it can also enter the Ibex 35 index. If we look at other indices, IPO companies seldomly get included in the top indices.
If we look at the participants of the Ibex 35, they belong to various sectors such as the construction, airport, tourism, steel, pharmaceuticals, industrials, automotive, IT services, real estate, and so on.
There is no room for small-cap or even mid-cap stocks in the famous Ibex 35 index. The index focuses solely on the large-cap Spanish stocks. If we look at the market capitalization and general investor's interest, it is usually in the large-cap companies. So it makes sense to only include the big companies in an index since that is where most of the money is parked.
.If the top 35 Spanish companies appreciate in price and value, it will directly show in the Ibex 35 index. Similarly, if the performance of the top Spanish stocks is bad and they are losing value, it will also reflect in the index.
The returns of the Ibex 35 index over the last few years have not been good. In 2008, the index lost -39%, only to recover 29% in 2009. If we look at more recent data, the index was down -14.97% in 2018. In 2019, the index appreciated modestly and closed with an 11% gain. In 2020, the index lost -15.42%, which can be attributed to the global pandemic 'COVID-19'.
