How Many Times Has Google Stock Split Guide

Analysis by Andrew Blumer, Updated Last updated – June 25, 2025

How Many Times Has Google Stock Split?

It was controversial. Many believed the Google stock split was not up to the investors' standards. In this article titled How Many Times Has Google Stock Split, we will take a look at the Google stock split and how the step impacted share prices. We will also discuss whether there are more splits on the cards for the future.

How Many Times Has Google Stock Split - History

Let us check the history of the Google stock split first. The company has classified its shares in two types of stocks namely class A and class C. The first is GOOGL while the symbol for the second category is GOOG.

The GOOGL or class A was made available for the public until 3 April 2014 when a split took place to create GOOG or class C. The split ratio was 1998/1000. The price before the move was $1135.10 while the price after the move was $667.55.

The primary reason for the split was to ensure founders Sergey Brin and Larry Page retained the overall voting control of Google. The second reason was to reduce the share prices of the company by half. The class C shareholders enjoy no voting rights.

The Google stock split was then controversial as no fresh share was issued. But the move was a step followed by other companies. Snap Inc., Facebook and Under Armour found the benefits of preserving voting rights.

Google initiated another stock split on 27 April 2015. Only class C was touched and it was like compensation. It awarded 2.7455 shares for every 1000 units owned by an investor. It was assumed that the move may help the class C stock to be traded at a discount to class A as no voting power was enjoyed. The stock split ratio was 2.7455/1000.

Besides these two classes, there are class B shares and these are basically owned by a handful of directors apart from Sergey Brin and Larry Page. The class offers ten times the voting rights compared to class A shareowners.

Example of Google Stock Split

Lets assume an investor-owned 1000 shares of the company before the first stock split. Following the split, he owned 1000 shares of class A and 998 shares of class C considering the ratio 1998/1000. Now, on 31 January 2019, the total number of shares of Class A outstanding were 299,360,029 and that of class B were 46,535,019. The figures for class C shares were 349,291,348.

It is noticed that the total number of class B is relatively low in comparison to class A. But the voting power is ten times more and this makes a huge difference.

Larry Page owned 19,952,558 class B shares and his voting power was 26.1 percent while Sergey Brin owned 19,263,666 class B shares and enjoyed the voting right of 26.2 percent. Eric E. Schmidt had 200,722 class A shares and 3,996,311 class B shares. He enjoyed just 5.3 percent of the voting power.

Ruth M. Porat and Sundar Pichai owned 3,000 and 16,205 class A shares respectively and had no voting power. David C. Drummond had 94,977 units of class A shares and 12,500 units of class B shares. He too enjoyed no voting rights.

L. John Doerr owned 145,594 class A shares and 1,117,447 class B shares. He enjoyed 1.5 percent of voting rights.

Future Google Stock Split

It is being speculated that Google may take another stock split move in the future. Some believe the current share price makes it inaccessible to certain investors, especially the part-timers. However, the founders are more concerned for the long-term investors and not the part-timers or those who lack a lot of capital.

However, it is to note again that the founders enjoy the majority of the voting shares and hence any split in the future will be approved by the two.

How Many Times Has Google Stock Split Verdict

In this article we basically talked about the meaning and importance of such splits and what the reasons for the two stock splits in the past were. Some have criticised the move while companies like Facebook found a unique method used to retain the voting rights with the top brass. It is not yet clearly known whether there could be any similar stock split in the future even though it is being widely speculated. As the two founders enjoy the majority of the voting rights in the company, the future split decision cannot be controlled by anyone other than them.
