Growth Of Tesla Guide

Analysis by Andrew Blumer, Updated Last updated - April 18, 2024

Tesla's Origins

Tesla, Inc, formerly titled Tesla Motors, was founded in the year 2003 by businesspersons (and engineers) Marc Tarpenning and Martin Eberhard in San Carlos, California. The company got its name after the nineteenth-century investor Nikola Tesla, known in history for his discovery of the qualities of revolving electromagnetic fields. Tesla is popular for its noteworthy contributions to electrical engineering as well as science. In fact, throughout recent decades, the company has become a part of popular culture amongst not only engineers, but the general public as well.

After the company was founded, Eberhard acted as its CEO while Tarpenning, as CFO. The duo initiated their company in order to design and produce cars that would entirely be electric, on the basis of the positive response test markets showed to General Motor's EV1. Through General Motors only operated from 1996 to 1999, releasing a limited line of cars that were never out for the general public to acquire, it was still considered a breakthrough in terms of engineering. Eberhard and Tarpenning wished to build on that success.

Elon and Tesla

Even though Elon Musk has been closely associated with Tesla for a long time, he was not fully onboard with the company until 2004. He contributed 30 million USD into the company, becoming the chairman of its board of managers.

In the year 2006, the founders released the model of their 'Roadster'. The vehicle began seeing production in 2008. With the release of the Roadster, Tesla received a lot of success and critical acclaim. They had produced a completely electric car with specifications that could meet user requirements.

In 2007, Eberhard stepped down as CEO, who was replaced temporarily by Michael Marks. Later on, Ze'ev Drori took over as Tesla's CEO.

The first model released in 2008 could travel approximately 402.3 kilometres using just a single battery, with a top speed comparable to many user-level sports cars.

Despite all this, the Roadster was still not a widely viable product. The car cost a bit more than 100K USD and ran into charging time problems.

Tesla Goes Public

Tesla was made public in the month of June 2010. It opened on the NASDAQ at 17 USD per share and managed to raise 226 million USD in its IPO.

In 2012, Tesla discontinued the Roadster and went on focus on its new vehicle called the “Model S” sedan, which also received critical acclaim for its design and performance. In fact, it became the most superior car in its group throughout every existing category. Also starting in 2012, Tesla build stations known as 'Supercharges' in the US and Europe meant for charging batteries quickly without any extra costs.

In 2015, the company released the 'Model X' which was a vehicle designed with sport-utility features but build on a car framework. Due to a demand for more cost-effective vehicles, the Model 3 sedan, went into production in 2017.

The company, at one point in 2015, also branched out to work on solar energy products, e.g., batteries meant to store electricity from solar power. Later in 2016, Tela bought SolarCIty – a solar panel corporation.

In 2017 the company formally renamed itself Tesla, Inc., to signify that it was no longer only a car company.

Elon Musk SEC Issues

In 2018, Musk was charged with an investment fraud by SEC based on a series of tweets Musk made regarding taking Tesla from public to private that were considered false, and misleading investors in a detrimental way. Later on, Musk and Tesla accepted a settlement from the SEC where he consented to pay 20 million USD and stepped down as the Tesla's Board of Directors Chairman. Robyn Denholm then took his place. Tesla also had to pay 20 million USD, agreeing to supervise Musk's Twitter account.

In 2019, the SEC sought a contempt order following Musk's tweet of him announcing Tesla's production capacity. The settlement was amended after it was evident that Tesla had not conducted supervision over Musk's Twitter account.

Later in 2019, Musk and Tesla released the “Cybertruck”, of which Musk claimed Tesla got 250K orders of.

In 2020, after experiencing a solid fiscal quarter along with upgrades from analysts, Tesla saw its stock surge, reaching over 900 USD with time.

Tesla's Developments

Tesla revealed in the beginning of January its vehicle production and delivery results for the fourth quarter full year as well as for the full year 2020. The auto manufacturer manufactured approximately 180K vehicles and delivered approximately 181K in the fourth quarter. As for full year 2020, the auto manufacturer produced around 510K vehicles and delivered around 500K.

In Tesla's yearly filing for full year 2020, the company stated that it had revised its investment policy to make way for more flexibility in order to maximize and diversify returns on cash that is not necessary to retain satisfactory operating cash flow. The policy was updated to make it possible for the company to invest a share of its cash in reserve assets like gold bullion, digital assets, and more. After the policy change, Tesla happened to invest Bitcoin worth $1.5 billion. The company initially revealed that it was planning to begin recognizing Bitcoin as a proper form of payment, only to turn back on its decision as Musk stated his concerns regarding the increasingly detrimental environmental effects of bitcoin mining.

Tesla also became qualified to be included in the S&P (Standard & Poor) 500 index after showing a fourth quarter streak of profitability according to GAAP (or generally accepted account principles) in the second quarter in 2020. The S&P committee had initially decided not to include Tesla in the index during early September.

Musk announced via a tweet that Tesla had planned the delivery event for the Model S Plaid sedan, which would be at the company' California factory on the 3rd of June 2021. Musk claimed that the Plaid will be the fastest car yet.

Tesla has also promised the release of the renewed Cybertruck, which is predicted to go into production towards the end of 2021. It has also disclosed that the deliveries of its semi-truck will commence before the end of the year as they are in the works. A next generation Roadster is also in production but is scheduled to be released later on.

Tesla Finances

Tesla Inc. has, over the past year, grown quickly to be one of the world's greatest fully electric vehicle companies via its car and pickup truck sales in the US, China, as well as other countries around the world. The automobile segment is responsible for a majority of the revenue at the company, with the US only making up under half of those sales. Tesla is faced with growing competition from other large-scale auto manufacturers developing as well as selling electrically driven vehicles such as Daimler, Nio Inc., Volkswagen, and General Motors Co.

Tesla, at the beginning of 2021, announced its very first full-year profits, an achievement 18 years in the making. The company, founded in 2003, claimed that it earned a total of 721 million in the year 2020, despite the pandemic thwarting sales as well as manufacture in the US. This was the opposite of the 862 million USD loss it faced in 2019. The automobile company also happened to make 270 million USD throughout the last three months of 2020, i.e., in contrast to 105 million during the same time period in 2019.

The fourth-quarter earnings, however, turned out to be below the expectations of analysts, and was down approximately 5 percent in extensive trading on the 27th of January.

Tesla's drastic switch towards profitability became an important watershed moment for the company, especially considering it has seen a handful of successful new competitors throughout recent decades. The company's turn towards success and profitability was mostly due to its rising sales in Europe and China, as well as the introduction of a new fourth car known as the Model Y, which has become Tesla's best seller in the US.

2020 Tesla's Defining Year

According to Musk in a conference call with experts, the previous year, i.e., 2020 was a defining year for them on many levels. He said that despite having a challenging environment, they reached a crucial milestone in terms of production as well as the deliveries of half a million vehicles.

Tesla's sales surged approximately 36 percent to exactly 499,550 cars last year. That increase was mostly driven by a factory in Shanghai which opened a year prior and has started producing the Model Y along with its precursor, the Model 3. China happens to be the largest market in the world in terms of conventional as well as electric vehicles.

The company announced profits of 10.7 billion USD for the duration of the fourth quarter, which was up 45.5 percent compared to the previous year, same period. The company's full-year revenue rose to 31.5 billion, from 2019's 24.6 billion.

However, according to Tesla, its operating income margin, i.e., an evaluation of the amount of money it earns for each dollar of sales, fell as low as 5.4 percent throughout the fourth quarter compared to 9.2 percent during the third. The gross income margin in its automobile business had been 24.1 percent, which was the lowest of any quarter in the year 2020.

Tesla's profits and final result were aided via the sale of 401 million USD emission rights in the fourth quarter to other auto manufacturers needing them to comply with regulatory guidelines.

Musk has proposed that the company might be able to sell more than 800K cars in 2021 as the company increases output at its Chinese plan and opens up another plant in production close to Berlin. Another plant is being built close to Austin, Texas, that is predicted to start producing cars towards the end of the year.

In a report, the company predicted that 2021 sales would increase by an upwards of 50 percent, suggesting a total in sales of 750K cars, at the very least. The company also stated that it expected its yearly sales growth to be around 50 percent throughout the next several years.

Tesla Vs Other Car Manufacturers

The auto manufacturer is also being faced with challenges, however. Tesla makes less revenue compared to some of its more established and larger competitors. In just the third quarter, General Motors made 4 billion USD in revenue, which is more than five-fold Tesla's total for the entire year.

In Europe, Tesla is facing rising competition from Hyundai, Renault, Volkswagen, Daimler, as well as other auto manufacturers that have brought out enhanced and more cost-effective electric vehicles. Some of those vehicles are even selling more than the Model 3, which had been Tesla's top selling electrically powered car in that region.

Although Tesla does not reveal its sales by country of region, it has been somewhat evident that the company's sales in the US slowed in 2020, mostly due to the pandemic as well as the uncertainty around it. But Tesla has also experienced its Model 3 sales slow down, and its Model Y deliveries increase, according to the data found on new car registrations from Texas, California, along with twenty other states evaluated by a market research corporation known as Cross-Sell.

Competition in the US has also gotten more intense as Ford Motor has begun the deliveries of the electric sport-utility vehicle Mustang Mach-E, and Volkswagen has also introduced its ID.4. Both vehicles are qualified for federal tax credits. Such credits do not apply to Tesla vehicles anymore, making the Mach-E and ID.4 more affordable compared to the Model Y.

The company revealed in February that it invested in 1.5 billion worth of bitcoins and was planning to invest in other cryptocurrencies in the near future as well. Around April, bitcoin surged to peak levels before falling again. In Tesla's cash flows statement, the company disclosed that it had sold “digital assets” worth 272 million USD for the duration of the quarter.
