Global Innovation Index Guide

Analysis by Andrew Blumer, Updated Last updated - March 26, 2024

Global Innovation Index

The Global Innovation Index is a comparative index rating countries by their ability to innovate. The GPI is often used to determine the performance of a country as reflected by its technological levels and its ability to attract and develop new services and products. In addition, this index is used to gauge the overall quality of government at all levels and the condition of a country's economy. The index ranks economies based on their ability to excel in innovation and then correlate that performance with key metrics such as government spending, infrastructure development, and market penetration.

The methodology of the GPI is based on comparing current world benchmark indices against the measures used in the index. In doing so, it attempts to objectively determine each nation's ability to achieve future growth and competency. While many may view this as a subjective endeavour, the index itself clearly indicates that there is indeed a strong correlation between world standards of living and innovation outputs. By looking at the past and present, we can thus assess how well an economy has been able to adapt to changes in technology and how well it is progressing in overall competency. One can thus make a good case for investing in emerging economies while noting that other nations with already significant innovation levels are doing just fine without the need to look to emerging economies for innovation investments.

Understanding Global Innovation Index

When a country's Performance Indicator scores are compared with the goals and objectives of that country's government, the countries with scores that are higher than the average are said to be 'models of excellence'. There is another side of the index, which is that of entrepreneurs, which is also called the 'New Economy'. For businesses in the New Economy, it is no secret that they are the ones who really make money for their companies.

In understanding the index, we note that the index takes into consideration both the quality and quantity of innovations in addition to any changes in the policies of the governments that support such businesses. While it might be easy for business people in the New Economy to focus on the quantity of innovations, we suggest that looking at quality would be more appropriate because this is what profitable or successful innovations stem from. When you look at the quality of an invention, you will realise that it is rarely, if ever, seen as a mere change or development.

For example, when you look at the index, you see that the number of patents granted is indeed on the rise, but you will also note that there is a very large increase in the number of companies that are granted patents. We can say that this reflects the fact that innovation works in this case. On the other hand, the number of patents granted does not mean that new businesses are appearing out of thin air. On the contrary, it is an indication that innovation works, that it is already happening and that it works because there are new businesses being launched every day.

How the Global Innovation Index Ranks the Countries of the World

Now, let us look at the way in which the GDI ranks the countries of the world. The global index looks into seven key areas that are broadly divided between the developed and the developing world. These are government regulation, government spending, infrastructure, knowledge and information, globalisation, and entrepreneurial activity. At the top of the list is the government spending area, followed by regulation and infrastructure. The next three categories further crack down on government regulation and globalisation. The other categories provide a wide coverage that encompasses the other seven topics very nicely.

In summary, the world should take full advantage of the opportunity which is soon going to arrive with the creation of the index. Presently, there is not enough cooperation across different domains despite the fact that many research approaches have been launched, and the innovation process itself is decades old. However, if the global cooperation is made much more comprehensive, and the innovation process becomes much more open and inclusive, then we are going to see a dramatic increase in the level of productivity in all economies, across all domains, in the next few years. Therefore, it is a golden opportunity that we should tap into and utilise for the benefit of humanity as a whole.

Importance of the Global Innovation Index

One of the reasons that the index has such an influence on the business world is because it specifically looks into the areas that are important to local businesses and how those businesses are faring against their international competitors. Not only does this index provide valuable information regarding how well various countries are doing in terms of competitiveness, but it also provides data on key industries in each of the countries.

One other thing that business leaders from across the world may find of interest is the specific methods that are used to determine the rankings. There is actually a lot of debate over how to go about this. Some experts tend to feel that the best way to judge a nation's progress in this area is to look at the level of trade that it is experiencing. That is because trade, after all, is something that is considered to have huge economic value and is something stimulated by successful innovation.
